[18], 606 pp. woodcut tailpieces, contemporary full calf, rubbed, old library stamp on title page, from the library of Professor Eberhardt, paper slightly browned, otherwise copy in very good condition, Rostock, Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf, 1762.#h17115 Originally written…in Latin by the Swedish zoologist and botanist Friedrich Hasselquist (1722-1752) and published posthumously by the celebrated naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). First edition of the German translation of a travelogue and zoological work. Hasselquist arrived at Smyrna, where he spent the winter of 1749-1750 exploring the hinterland. In March 1750 he took a trip into the interior of Turkey, and afterwards sailed for Egypt. From Egypt he traveled to Palestine and Syria, visited Cyprus, Rhodes and Chios, and then returned to Smyrna". The work can be divided into two parts. The first part consists of a chronological journal, followed by 14 letters from Hasselquist to his tutor Linnaeus. The second part contains a zoological, botanical and mineralogical description of the area, starting with the four-footed animals, followed by birds, amphibians, fish, insects, plants and stones. Theil enthält Beschreibungen verschiedener wichtiger Naturalien" (Quadrupedia, Aves, Animalia visa in Terra Sancta, Amphibia, Pisces, Insecta, Vermes, Plantae, Plantae Cucurbitinae Aegypti, Lapides, Historia Naturalis Palaestinae, Materia Medica, Commercia). - Linne hatte in seinen Vorlesungen darauf hingewiesen, dass die Naturgeschichte gerade des Heiligen Landes unbekannt sei und von den größten Theologen und gelehrtesten Philologen sehr gewünscht wurde. Friedrich Hasselquist, Linnes Schüler, entschloss sich, die Naturgeschichte Palästinas aufzuklären, obwohl seine Gesundheit bereits beeinträchigt war. Auf der Rückreise verstarb er in Smyrna. Er hatte sich hoch verschuldet und seine Gläubiger bemächtigten sich seiner kostbaren Sammlungen und Manuskripte. Die Königin von Schweden beglich Hasselquists Schulden aus ihrem Privatvermögen und ließ seinen Nachlass nach Schweden bringen. Carl von Linne erhielt den Auftrag, Hasselquists Aufzeichnungen "in Ordnung zu bringen und druch den Druck zum Nutzen und Vergnügen des Allgemeinen bekannt zu machen." Die Erstausgabe dieses Werkes erschien 1757 in Schwedisch. Außer dieser deutschen Übersetzung sind noch eine englische (1766), eine französische (1769) und eine niederländische Übersetzung (1771) erschienen. - Stafleu and Cowan, Taxonomic Literature 2.459 Etwas berieben und bestoßen.
