Small newspaper clipping glued to back "St. Louis Attorney Mrs. Frankie Freeman has been appointed to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission by President Johnson. Freeman began her work as a civil rights attorney in 1949 as part of the NAACP legal team in Brewton v. the Board of Education of St. Louis, challenging the "separate but equal" doctrine. In 1954, she served as the lead attorney for the landmark NAACP case Davis et al. v. the St. Louis Housing Authority, which ended legal racial discrimination in public housing in St. Louis. She monitored the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and provided a safe house for three of the "Little Rock Nine," who were the first in the south to test Brown v. Board of Education after school segregation was outlawed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Frankie Muse Freeman became the first woman to be appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights in 1964. She was reappointed by Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter. President Carter appointed Freeman to be Inspector General of the Community Services Administration in 1979. She served briefly in this role until President Ronald Reagan demanded that all Democratic inspectors general appointed by previous presidents resign. Freeman returned to St. Louis and continued to practice law.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. What happened to a dream deferred? Dr. Edward Haynie, an African-American and third generation educator, fought discrimination while trying to advance. His lifelong dream of becoming a dentist to serve his community was systematically haltered by institutional racism both subtle and direct. Author Vivian Johnson details his thought provoking true story. His Dream instilled in him as a child by his uncle, was obstructed by the prejudice of Caucasian professors who manipulated the system to his disadvantage. Haynie, a bright, young, enthusiastic chemistry professor, became the first African-American accepted in the first class of Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine at Edwardsville, Illinois in 1972.Little did he know "the powers that be" would foil his every effort to be the best dental student possible. Haynie's courage persisted as he filed a discrimination suit with the support of the NAACP for the psychological torture he endured. He paved the way for other African-American students to succeed in future attempts to obtain a Doctor of Dental Medicine from SIU-E. This story, set in the 1970's, unveils the inequities that still persist in higher education today. This item is printed on demand.
