Oblong 4to. 10.25 x 7 in. [24 pp (unpaginated).] With 15 original silver gelatin photographs sized from 2.5 x 3.5 in., all neatly mounted w/ tan paper corners, 1 printed business card for Franklin mounted on front pastedown w/ corners. Simulated burgundy-coloured crocodile post-binder boards, gilt lettering stamped on front c ov…er, punch-sewn at gutter margin w/ brown silk braid, NF exemplar, w/ all photos having nice contrast. A fascinating souvenir album chronicling the career of a young aviator, test pilot, and aerial photographer during the Great Depression while working as an instructor for the T.C. Ryan Flying School in Salem & Albany, Oregon. The photos depict Franklin seated in the cockpit of a race plane; aerial view of the Salem Airport, and other airports; image of a 1935 Waco YPF-6 Biplane crashed onto its belly with pontoons laying behind; trick flying including inverted shots, and smoke writing a '76" for Union 76 Gasoline. Along with an interior and exterior shot of a stylish streamlined Art Deco 1937 DeSoto, the album concludes with a shot of Watsonville Airport in Santa Cruz, CA with a Travel Air E-4000 biplane at the hangar entrance owned by D.M. Harwick with dirigible flying above the field. Franklin (1912-1957) was the son of longtime Salem dry cleaner owner Orie F. Franklin (1882-1960), and after Ryan Flying School became a C.A.A. flying instructor in Albany, Oregon, enlisted and served in the Navy during World War II, recovered from a bout of malaria, and following the War moved to California where he became a test pilot for North American Aviation jet aircraft until 1955. He subsequently became a Hollywood Stunt pilot working with Paul Mantz, and is perhaps best remembered as having restored with his friend Coffin one of three Ryan B-1 aircraft substituted as Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, and also doubled along with Mantz for James Stewart for some shots in the filming of the 1957 movie "The Spirit of St. Louis." Tragically he was subsequently killed after filming in an automobile accident along Pacific Highway.

12mo. 24 pages. Original self-wrappers, sewn. Contains the first appearance in print of Franklin's mock epitaph composed when he was 22 years old in 1728. Ames provides the humorless introduction: "Mr. Franklin's Epitaph on himself curious for conveying such solemn ideas in the Stile of his Occupation": "The Body of BENJAMIN FRA…NKLIN Printer, Like the Covering of an Old Book Its contents torn out And stript of its Lettering and Gilding, Lies here, Food for Worms; But the Work shall not be lost, It will (as he believ'd) appear once more In a new and more beautiful Edition Corrected and amended By the Author He was born January 6th 1706 and died.17___." Twenty years later when death finally came at age 84, Franklin opted for the simpler and less whimsical: "Franklin, Deborah and Benjamin, 1790." This copy is the state that correctly names Abel Puffer as author of "A sure and certain cure for the bite of a rattle snake .", p. [24]. Drake, M. Almanacs, 3197; Evans 11548 ("Advertised in the Massachusetts gazette and Boston weekly news-letter (R. Draper), Nov. 29, 1770, and in the Boston gazette (Edes & Gill) and Boston evening post (T. & J. Fleet), Dec. 3, as "to be sold by R. Draper, T. & J. Fleet, Edes & Gill." Evans takes the printer to be William McAlpine, evidently through extrapolation from the McAlpine editions of Ames for this and other years. This issue is, however, from a type setting clearly different from McAlpine's for 1771."). Some light wear at edges, generally well preserved.
