Condición: Nuevo. La praxis de la Iglesia latina nos ha acostumbrado a pensar en el bautismo y la confirmación como dos sacramentos independientes, celebrados en momentos cronológicamente distintos y en diferentes circunstancias de la vida. Sin embargo, existe otra praxis eclesial no menos legítima y más acorde con la tradición originaria. La Iglesia oriental nunca ha separado ambos sacramentos, ni por lo que respecta a sus ministros ni por lo que hace al momento de su celebración. Aun cuando los distinga en teoría, la praxis de dicha Iglesia no contempla la posibilidad de pensar en uno de ellos sin pensar en el otro, y menos aún en celebrarlos por separado. En esta obra, el autor desarrolla una teología del bautismo y la confirmación que integra rito y vida cristiana, teniendo siempre como hilo conductor el esquema de la fiesta. Al realizar la fusión entre la teología de uno y otro sacramento, retornando a la antigua Tradición, ve el bautismo y la confirmación en su fundamental unidad. Sin poner en cuestión la validez dogmática de la práctica vigente en la Iglesia latina, el autor adopta como punto de partida el bautismo de adultos, opción teológica basada en el hecho de que el Nuevo Testamento reflexiona sobre el bautismo a partir de la práctica de una conversión asumida libre y responsablemente. Además, pone de relieve el bautismo-confirmación como sacramento del laicado, o sacramento del ser cristiano, pues la teología bautismal-crismal es una teología de la vida cristiana. Lo que es común a todos y cada uno de los miembros de la Iglesia es la igual dignidad de todos los cristianos, que consiste en el hecho de que todos ellos constituyen una comunidad de fe: el Pueblo santo de Dios.
