Il barone Fouques de Vagnonville (Douai 1806-Firenze 1876), appassionato di antichità, trasferì nel 1861 la ricca collezione di reperti provenienti soprattutto dall'agro chiusino nel suo palazzo fiorentino sul Lungarno delle Cascine. Alla sua morte la raccolta archeologica passò per legato testamentario alla città di Firenze e fu trasferita a Palazzo Vecchio. Qui Gian Francesco Gamurrini allestì il "Museo Vagnonville" in una sala del Quartiere di Leone X. Nel 1882 il Comune di Firenze depositò la raccolta Vagnonville nel nuovo Museo Archeologico, appena inaugurato, dove fu parzialmente esposta nella sala VII.

L'oggetto - come spiega l'Autore nell'apparato di note che fanno seguito al componimento - fu gia' descritto da Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli secondo la quale la scena dipinta rappresentava l'iniziazione a un qualche mistero bacchico. Secondo Gamurrini, si tratta invece di una cerimonia che vede al centro la statua di Priapo, con il mantello e il tirso, e la lustrazione dei semi da piantarsi nell'orto di cui Priapo era il custode.
