Owner's name followed by the date Jan 1912 on half-title page of Vol 1, so likely to be end of 1911 or beginning of 1912. The books appear to be bound in 1/2 red lea…ther, though it is very thin. The labels are in a contrasting green leather with title in gilt. Top edge gilt, other edges rough cut. Both volumes are sunned to the spine. There is bumping to the foot of the spines which are rubbed with some surface loss. There is a visible repair to a split at the head of the spine of vol 1 and a small chip. (pictures available). Some rubbing to the surface to the rear board. Internally, name & date to half-titles as mentioned. A few spots to the prelims. Clean and in good order. Heavy set weighing 3 kgs, but no extra postage within UK - will be sent by Standard Parcels or Parcelforce. Please enquire for cost of other options and for overseas. Illus (ilustrador).

The title p…age is a cancel with the Lippincott masthead imprint added for the exported US edition. The binding design matches that of the 1911 Chapman & Hall London edition save for the change to Lippincott in lieu of Chapman at the base of the cloth spines. Dark blue cloth with double blind ruled borders to boards; elaborate decorative title design in gilt to spine with the CD monogramed letters framing the JF inner monogram, repeated to the upper board at center. This Memorial edition issued from Forster's revised edition text but with substantial additions collected by Matz including numerous facsimile wrapper designs from 1st edition Dickens, titles, portrait reproduction, photographs of locations and persons etc. Both volumes snugly bound and neat with mild shelf rub apparent to cloth at tips and light crimping and superficial stress at spine ends. Xxxiv, 481, [1]; xxvi, 515 pp. Errata sheet tipped in between xxii and xxiii in Vol I. Handsome set in the uncommon 1st US edition - printed and bound in England using a Lippincott imprint on a cancel title page. Overall VG+ .
