The binding is bumped & lightly rubbed with some light foxing & soiling to the wraps. A mailing address is stamped on the rear wrap. 38 pages. Black-and-white illustrations with Bayreuth and Metropolitan opera playbills reproduced in black on tan stock. The page corners are lightly bumped & the edges of the tan pages are slightly darkened. Hardcover has green cloth-covered boards with elaborate blind-stamped cover decorations and gold spine lettering and decorations, including a fox and hounds. Light yellow endpapers. Six color plates, hand-tinted, illustrated by John Leech. Binding strong and intact, with just an inch of the endpaper at the top of the front hinge splitting. Covers are worn and rubbed, with three small but deep scratches on the front. Cloth at the head of the spine is torn and frayed. Corners and spine ends bumped and rounded with tips fraying. Endpapers and first few pages soiled and finger smudged, with light foxing. Gift and ownership inscriptions in pencil on front free endpaper and the following two blank pages, some dated 1873. Pages foxed and age-spotted, with occasional brown finger smudges in the margins. NO highlighting or other markings. A few pages are dog-eared. A few pages have small tears in the edges; one page has a 3-inch tear at center which appears to be a flaw in the paper. The rear pages of the book has a pair of curved dents suggesting that something was once stored in the book, and these dents have propagated noticeably back through about quarter of the book; readability is not affected. Pages moderately and uniformly tanned but still supple; pages closer to plates are more tanned. 425 pages + 3 pages of publisher's advertising. No dust jacket. Carefully packed, shipped in a box.…

Original brown blindstamp boards, with gilt on spine strip still bright, lightly soiled and shelfworn, with wear along edges, both spine ends chipped with wear along spine strip (front and rear gutter) on volume 2 and both volumes edge points gently bumped and worn to boards. Page edges soiled.  Internally, both volumes have age toning to yellow end-pages with a large bookplate to inside front boards of both volumes with a different previous owners name stamped to both 1st free end-pages. Both volumes have foxing scattered throughout with volume 2 having old damp stains to bottom edge of both ends of book, diminishing as book progresses. Both bindings are tight with hinges intact. Original half calf leather with slightly raised bands and black label. Leather is much chipped to the bottom of the spine and it is lacking a 3/4 inch section. The front board is off and the back board has been inexpertly reinforced. Marbled boards and endpages. frontispiece has been glued to title page affecting readablity of title page and the text description of the frontispiece plate. Lacking most of the two fold out horse genealogies. Generaly light foxing throughout. One plate torn in half but complete. Lacking plate for the fifth month. Otherwise complete. READING COPY only.
