In 1634, John Lord Balmerino stood accused of retaining and annotating a petition critical of Charles I's liturgical impositions, a document never published, but shared privately among dissenting peers. Though the petition was intended for the King, it was intercepted before presentation, and Balmerino's possession of a copy, interlined in his own hand, was construed as libel. Tried in Edinburgh before a jury shaped by episcopal influence, he was convicted by a single vote and sentenced to death. Yet the charge, "leasing-making" or sowing discord between monarch and subject, and the trial's irregularities drew elite sympathy. Balmerino was pardoned but confined, later emerging as a leading Covenanter. The case exposed the fragility of justice under royal pressure and foreshadowed Scotland's resistance to Charles's liturgical impositions. 61 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. This card presumably was enclosed with the book when sent to its original owner. 373 pages, top edge is gilded, no bookplates or owner names or stamps. The covers of the volume are red, maroon or burgundy, take your choice. The frontispiece is tissue guarded with no tears in the tissue, the fold out map is in fine shape, a bit darker in color than the book pages. There is light wear at the head and tail of the spine and the top outer corner has a light bump, other corners show light wear. All in all, a quite presentable and serviceable copy; available for immediate shipment; carefully packed in a sturdy box.

The dark red covers have sharp lettering on the spine and a quite sharp R. R. Donnelley emblem on the front cover as well as decorative bordering. No bookplates or ownership names or stamps, no foxing, no smudges, no folded or dogeared pages, not ex-libris, no underlining, no highlighting. Top edge is gilded and is still bright. There is wear at the head and tail of the spine and at corners. The work itself has been protected for the last two decades by a clear archival quality cover that is easily removeable. A quite nice copy, available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box!
