A frontispiece of The Gloster 'Gauntlet' fighter plane by Stanley Orton Bradshaw, as well as three other colour illustrations, four monochrome illustrations, and numerous woodcut illustrations by both Bradshaw and Leigh. Collated complete.Most famous for creating fighter hero 'Biggles', W.E. Johns has teamed up with Rochester and Hansboro to offer more daring adventures inspired by their service during the First World War. Alongside Leigh and Bradswhaw's illustrations, the tales are brilliant for portraying the brave actions of aces, as well as the life-threatening challenges they had to endure. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth. Externally, smart, with the occasional minor scratch to boards. Marginal fading to the spine. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with signs of shelf wear to extremities. End papers are clean, with rare spot to extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound, with signs of wear to hinge between leaf p.76 and 'Reconnaisance' plate. Pages are bright and clean, with occasional browning to top of leaves. Very Good. book.

Pencil scribbles on inside of front board. The frontis illustration is by Howard Leigh. Two of the other b&w plates are by Howard Leigh and the third is by W. E. Johns ("Johns") . The b&w plate by Johns has moderate creasing and several 1" tears in the margins. Of the 5 colour plates, the first two are by Stanley Orton Bradshaw. The other three have no artist's name. Some are possibly by W. E. Johns? One of the other three plates is titled "The Camels are Coming", which was the titel of W. E. Johns first book. The missing sixth plate is titled "The Duel". Some of the colour plates are in fair condition only as someone has traced over the outlines of the images creating indentations in the paper. 1" chip missing in one plate. 2" marginal tear and several 3/8" tears in one plate. Rubber school stamp on title page. Occasional pen marks or small stains. Moderate browning to pages throughout. The front board is very worn with chips and heavy rubbing. This book is a collection of 11 short stories, of which 3 are by W. E. Johns. One of these three stories is a Biggles story ("The Ace of Spades") . ; 8vo.

Fine The flag was from the estate of Albert I Lodwick, the flight operations manager for Hughes during this feat. Additionally included is a 7 1/4" x 9" black and white gelatin silver photograph of Hughes posed with John S Lodwick, Albert Lodwick and Chicago Mayor Edward Kelly after the famed trip. Signed by Howard Hughes next to Kelly's. Light stain at the base of the photograph. Flag is fine. Rare.
