Não pretende espelhar automaticamente a sintaxe do original, nem adotar o dicionário como autoridade máxima no que concerne ao sentido das palavras. Procura ler o poema como fenômeno de linguagem, não como documento de língua. Muitos tradutores veem na obra clássica uma plataforma para comentários eruditos. O que se propõe realizar aqui se afasta dessa tradição filológica, apegada a uma espécie de crença na verdade literal. Ocorre que é possível manter a fidelidade através de um diálogo arejado com o original, que permita recuperar em outro plano, mesmo que parcialmente, certos efeitos poéticos. Nesse caso, fidelidade não se confunde com arremedo. Isso nada tem a ver com falta de rigor, antes o contrário, pois a atenção extrema à forma da expressão original é motivada justamente pelo rigor. Apenas que esta modalidade de rigor não veta o exercício da imaginação. Catulo é um dos pioneiros da poesia coloquial no Ocidente. Ezra Pound considerou-o insuperável nesse campo. Jocoso, mordaz, irreverente, apaixonado, irônico, nenhuma dessas características esmorece o notável controle formal de sua dicção. É avesso ao estilo caudaloso, opta pela fluidez e concisão. Horácio, por sua vez, é um extraordinário compositor, imenso explorador do potencial sintático do latim, que realizou como poucos o projeto de exprimir a serenidade. Seu despojamento pressupõe uma visão de mundo avessa a cultivar a inutilidade no breve curso da vida. Além do excesso, desdenha da estridência. Evita a oscilação de humor. É um defensor intransigente do requinte que há no simples. A poesia, como as demais expressões da arte, pretende se instaurar pela autonomia, busca ser uma voz autônoma cuja única justificativa está na realização de sua expressão. Esse é o seu princípio, e é a esse princípio motivador que o tradutor de poesia deve procurar ficar atento. Imergir em sua expressão para dela emergir, quem sabe por alguns momentos, com alguma formulação que faça jus ao original; reverente, mas não servil.
