Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 26 × 18.5cm, 267pp. The New York City subway, considered an engineering feat and a work of art, has kindled the imagination of millions. Art and the Subway explores artistic production surrounding the world's most famous public transportation system, from just before its opening in 1904 to the present day. Using a stunning array of images, Tracy Fitzpatrick offers perspectives on ways in which the subway has been used as a subject about which to make art, as a site within which to make art, and as a canvas upon which to make art. The author captures the emotions of artists and riders alike, as she explores paintings, photographs, performance art, graffiti, and public art by artists such as Walker Evans, Bruce Davidson, DONDI, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Jacob Lawrence, Reginald Marsh, Elizabeth Murray, and many others. She also considers representations of the subway in film, on song sheet covers, and in illustration. By examining the cultural, technological, and social contexts for these creative interpretations, Fitzpatrick illuminates in fresh ways the contradictions and harmonies between public and private space. Featuring 17 colour plates and 80 black-and-white images, Art and the Subway takes readers on a fascinating ride through the visual history of one of the twentieth century's greatest urban planning endeavours as it grew, changed form, and reinvented itself with passion and vitality. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with a little light wear to the wrapper's edges.…

Soft cover. Condición: New. 1st Edition. Hannah Wilke: Gestures (NEW! SEALED!) The catalogue features works by Wilke, never before seen, as well as works not seen in over forty years. It contains a scholarly essay by exhibition curator Tracy Fitzpatrick, the transcript of a panel discussion held at the Neuberger Museum of Art between scholars Saundra Goldman, Tom Kochheiser, and Griselda Pollock on Wilke's art and legacy, and the first published chronology of Hannah Wilke's artistic practice. The exhibition, Hannah Wilke: Gestures, held at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, The State University of New York, between October 3, 2008 and January 25, 2009, included over sixty works by the artist. The act of folding is the salient gesture in the sculptures of American artist Hannah Wilke (1940-1993). Taking such materials as clay, bubble gum and Play-Doh, Wilke fashioned serial forms that folded inward or opened out with overtly labial sensuousness. Wilke often placed these objects in compromising situations--hinged with pins or glued to walls and boards, placed freely on the floor, always seemingly on the verge of disaster. Today she is famed for her many nude self-portraits, which have threatened to eclipse the sculptural basis of both the portraits themselves and her work in general. By emphasizing folding as a gesture, this catalogue--the first on the artist to appear in many years--unites Wilke's sculpture and photography under the rubric of performance, and the performing of material. With an abundance of color reproductions and critical commentary, Hannah Gestures offers a fresh assessment of a pioneer in sculpture, feminist art and performance.…

Condición: NUOVO. Neuberger Museum of Art cm.23x27, pp.96 illustrazioni a colori, legatura editoriale cartonata, copertina figurata a colori. Romuald Hazoumè: The Fâ Series presents a significant yet little-known body of work by one of Africa's most celebrated artists. Romuald Hazoumè's large-scale canvases are based on his dedicated study of Fâ divination, a centuries-old knowledge system that originated among Yorùbá-speaking communities in Nigeria, where it is known as Ifá. Its practice has since extended elsewhere in West Africa including the Republic of Benin, where Hazoumè is based, and to the diaspora. Hazoumè's research on Fâ in the early 1990s was revelatory, radically shifting his understanding of art and creativity. The resulting canvases draw from the visual lexicon associated with Fâ, referencing its sacred knowledge through symbols and glyphs. Described by the artist as his cultural anchor, these intimate, esoteric works speak to the generative potential of the artistic process in an ongoing quest for knowledge. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Neuberger Museum of Art, this fully illustrated catalog is the first extensive examination of Hazoumè's Fâ series. In an introductory essay, exhibition curator Christa Clarke discusses the evolution and significance of the series within Hazoumè's larger creative practice. An accompanying essay by Didier Houénoudé, professor of art history at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Cotonou, Benin, describes the divinatory process and offers an in-depth reading of Hazoumè's canvases.…
