Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Author: Winifred Finlay (1910-1989) What you're holding in the photo is the original first-issue dust jacket: • Cream top half, with "Winifred Finlay" small at top, "DANGER at BLACK DYKE" in large orange-red block letters • Graphic of two animal heads (lion and bull) mounted on poles — that's a Roman standard — against a solid purple block with a line-drawn landscape of the Northumberland crags. That's Hadrian's Wall country. • 184 pages, hardcover, green cloth under the jacket (standard Harrap binding for 1968) Publication History: • UK: George G. Harrap & Co Ltd, London, 1968 — listed as 1st Edition • US: S. G. Phillips, Inc., 1968-06-01, ISBN 0875991505 / 9780875991504 • Dimensions: approx 152 x 222mm / 6 x 8.75 inches 2. The Author Finlay wrote 31+ works, almost all children's adventure and folklore set in the North of England: • The Witch of Redesdale (1951), Peril in the Pennines (1953), The Lost Silver of Langdon, Mystery in the Middle Marches (1964), Danger at Black Dyke (1968), Cry of the Peacock (1969) and others The Hexham Local History Society groups her as a key children's author for the Tyne Valley: Danger at Black Dyke (1968), Mystery in the Middle Marches (1964), The witch of Redesdale (1951) — Children's adventures. 3. Plot — Detailed Publisher's official synopsis is the same everywhere: "Using their knowledge of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland three youngsters hide a mysterious man whom they later discover was a potential pawn for an unsuccessful Latin American Revolution." Expanded context: • Setting: "Black Dyke" is the local name for Hadrian's Wall — the Roman wall built by Emperor Hadrian across Northumberland. The story uses the actual forts, crags, and hiding holes of the Wall. • Characters: Three local youngsters (Finlay's typical formula — kids on holiday who know the moors better than adults). • Inciting incident: They find and hide a foreign man on the moors. • Twist: He is not a common criminal, but a political figure intended to be used as a pawn in a failed Latin American revolution — a very Cold War-era plot device. • Genre: Classified as Children's Fiction and Mystery and detective stories. It's a classic "kids vs. adult conspiracy" book where local knowledge of history saves the day. 4. Why it matters • It won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Juvenile in 1970 — the Mystery Writers of America's most prestigious mystery award. That's the reason this otherwise obscure children's book is still collected. …
