Wie verschieden aber ist der Sinn, welchen man diesen Worten zu verschiedenen Zeiten in der Kirche beigelegt hat! Wie zum teil entgegengesetzt sind die Folgen gewesen, welche sich aus ihrer Auffassung ergaben! Sie waren eine Mahnung Jesu an seine Jünger, in willigem und freudigem Gehorsam auch unter Verfolgung und Leiden für ihren Meister zu zeugen, aber es gab Zeiten, in denen sie als Aufforderung galten, sich zum Martyrium zu drängen. Sie waren an alle Bekenner Jesu gerichtet als ein gemeinsames Losungswort; aber bald genug fanden einzelne darin die Berechtigung, sich von den andern abzusondern, um sich mit dem ein Verdienst zu begründen, was aller Pflicht war. Sie wurden denen zugerufen, welche als teuer Erkaufte Gott an ihrem Leibe preisen sollen; aber wie oft wurden sie Anlass zur Herabwürdigung des Menschen, den Gott nach seinem Bilde geschaffen, zur Zerstörung des Tempels, in welchem er wohnen will. Sie enthalten einen Aufruf an die Christen, sich in der Welt zu bewähren und sie durch den Glauben zu überwinden; aber wie viele sahen darin eine Aufforderung, die Welt zu verachten und sie zu fliehen. Die glänzende Tugend aber, welche sie predigen, die Selbstverleugnung, beginnt mit der Selbsterkenntnis und beruht auf Wahrhaftigkeit; oft genug jedoch diente sie der Heuchelei. Sie hat sich vor allem in der Demut zu bewähren, und doch erzeugte sie auch den hässlichsten Hochmut. Sie ist das gerade Gegenteil der Selbstsucht, und gleichwohl wurde sie nicht selten in ihren äusseren Formen gewählt, um desto grösseren Egoismus, wenn auch feinerer Art, zu ermöglichen. Sie ist der Hauptsache nach freiwilliger Gehorsam und in ihren Forderungen durch die Individualität bedingt, und doch wurde sie auch für ganze Stände uniformiert, wurde zur Disciplin und Methode.
