Attractively rebound blue cloth hard cover with no cover wear, gilt titles within black frame on spine, and gilt date 1857 at lower spine end. Contains original folded map which is complete, and three plates including frontispiece, xxii, 534 pages and 32 pages of advertisements at rear, some browning/spotting of early pages. This second edition published in 1857 is bound in contemporary blue cloth and covers and in very good to near fine condition. Further information readily available if required.…

Hardcover. Second Edition. pp. xxii, 534. Royal Octavo. Bound in the original blind-stamped red cloth with gilt spine titles. There is a discrete binder's ticket on the rear pastedown stating 'Bound by Edmonds & Remnants. London'. The frontispiece, of Haji Mirza Aghassi, is present, as are the two internal plates, one showing a view of Baghdad, and the other 'A Persian gentleman'. Each plate has a touch of foxing, with some insignificant offsetting to the facing page. The folding map at the end has some traces of foxing, and is a bit crumpled at the inner edges, but is otherwise in very good condition. The cloth binding is a bit soiled, with the corners of the boards rounded and a touch of bumping to the edges. The hinges and joints remain strong, and the endpapers are intact. The binding is slightly sprung but the text block is tight, and the contents are clean, except for the title page, which has an old tide mark to the right margin, and an early former owner's signature (G. W. Nicole) to the top right. Overall, in good plus, to very good, condition. Josephe-Pierre Ferrier was a 19th century French traveler and professional soldier who served during the Algerian campaigns of 1830-1837. He was assigned to the Middle East in 1839, and then was stationed in Tehran, where he rose in the ranks but antagonized the Russian delegation, and was sent home in 1843. He travelled to India the following year and participated in various expeditions and adventures, including a period of captivity in Afghanistan. This account was completed in 1854. With 32 page catalogue, dated November, 1856, at the end of the book containing 'Mr. Murray's General List of Works'.…
