Sowohl in seinem Verlauf als auch seinem Ergebnis symptomatisch für den Umgang des post-sowjetischen Rußland mit seiner jüngsten Vergangenheit erscheint der KPdSU-Prozeß als geschichtspolitische Weichenstellung, deren Folgen bis heute spürbar sind: Der Verzicht auf eine umfassende gerichtliche Bewertung der Sowjetzeit und die faktische Rehabilitierung der Kommunistischen Partei kamen einer Richtungsentscheidung im Sinne der politischen und symbolischen "Koexistenz von Vergangenheit und Zukunft" im neuen Rußland gleich. Diese erschwert seither die Umsetzung einer konsequenten Reformpolitik und delegitimiert das Projekt einer Demokratisierung, die sich in Abgrenzung gegenüber dem totalitären sowjetischen Erbe definiert. Damit wurde das postkommunistische Regime einer wichtigen Legitimitätsressource beraubt. Die Studie zeichnet diese Reformulierung des geschichtspolitischen Wahrheitsregimes nach, die in der Ära Jelzin zu einer weitgehenden Tabuisierung der sowjetischen Vergangenheit im offiziellen Diskurs führte, während sie unter Putin sogar wieder verstärkt als positiver Bezugspunkt fungiert.
