Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a reprint of an expose on the infamous Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I. The book was originally penned by a respected figure of the era, who sought to alert the public to the extr…emism that had taken root in the heart of English society. Through first-hand accounts and analysis of the conspirators' motivations, this book offers deep insights into the religious and political tensions that plagued England during this turbulent period. It sheds light on the ways in which religious extremism can lead to unimaginable horrors, serving as both a poignant reminder of the past and a warning for future generations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

24pp. Printed theatre notice, excusing errors in the text, loosely inserted. Original printed paper tan wrappers. A trifle rubbed and dusty. Internally clean and crisp. A scarce programme for a staging at the Theatre Royal, Olympic, of an original pantomime based on the Gunpowder Plot, to be performed by 'a company of amateurs'…on 31st March, 1855. Peculiarly, the prologue, rather than being in anyway connected to the drama, takes the form of an argument on the merits of theatre between 'The Spirit of Pantomime', 'Modern Drama', and 'The Shade of Shakspere'. OCLC record copies at seven locations (BL, Chicago, Erfurt, Harvard, Illinois, Nottingham, and Rice); COPAC adds two further (Lancaster and Royal Collection). Size: 8vo.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good condition. Third Edition, with additions. This volume contains trials from 1388-1648, including the complete celebrated trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and Guy Fawkes. Sir Walter Raleigh's trial, 17th November 1603, in which Raleigh was accused of conspiracy to commit treason against the Crown for at…tempting to establish Arabella Stuart as queen of England rather than James I. At his trial the evidence consisted primarily of a sworn "confession" by Lord Cobham, Raleigh's alleged co-conspirator, but the tribunal refused to allow Cobham to testify. Raleigh was found guilty of treason, though King James spared his life and imprisoned him in the Tower of London until 1616, when he was released in order to head an expedition in search of El Dorado. (pp212-231). Guy Fawks (sic) trial, "the Gunpowder-Plot" follows immediately after Raleigh's trial. The plot was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of English Catholics led by Robert Catesby, which famously planned to blow up the House of Lords. The trial began on Monday 27 January 1606 at Westminster Hall. Fawkes pleaded not guilty, despite his apparent acceptance of guilt from the moment he was captured, and was sentenced to death. Volume I of a 6 volume set. Folio, xxiv, 1044pp. Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library, with their stamp on the title page. Tan library cloth binding with leather gilt spine label, and paper label, probably bound on accession in 1907. Cloth covers dusty and marked at spine, leather label chipped; Bar Association bookplate on verso of cover, from the Library of Charles P. Daly, Chief Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, a gift of Henry R. Hoyt, 1907. OCLC: 4724383.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good condition. Fourth edition. Trials of pirate Captain Kidd, and New York colonial politician Nicholas Bayard, complete in itself. Captain William Kidd (c.1654 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note that relegating him to the role of pi…rate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp287-339). In 1910 at the British Public Records archives, the French passes were found that Captain Kidd claimed would prove his innocence. The second trial of note included here is that of Colonel Nicholas Bayard, p419-440. Bayard, the 16th mayor of New York City, was accused in 1702 of high treason before Chief Justice William Atwood, on the basis of a remonstrance signed by him and others, considered to be libelous. Bayard was sentenced to death, but after the death of the New York governor and the corrupt Chief Justice, the proceedings were annulled, and Bayard's property and name were cleared. Volume 5 of 6 volumes. Folio, 852pp (text printed in 2 columns, each numbered as if a separate page). Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library, with their stamp on the title page. Pale green cloth with leather gilt spine labels, and paper label. Spine slightly sunned, labels chipped . OCLC: 1360856.

London, 1829. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2" "Kind Folks You See, Our Effigy, Designed for Guy Fawkes; Who With Base Mind, Was Once Inclin'd to Give King James Hard Knocks" [Broadside]. [Guy Fawkes Day]. A New Guy Fawkes Speech. [London]: E. Billing, 186, Bermondsey Street, [c.1840]. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2" broadside. Six-stanza verse text within wood…cut typographical border, first four stanzas in two columns, separated by woodcut rules below headline and vignette of a group of people burning Fawkes in effigy. Light toning, otherwise fine. A well-preserved rare item. $650. * A celebratory broadside commemorating Guy Fawkes Day. Also known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night or Firework Night, it is an English national holiday commemorating the failed Gunpowder Plot, an attempt by a group of Catholics to assassinate King James I by blowing up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament. The plot was foiled when Fawkes was discovered with a cache of explosives hidden beneath the House of Lords. The date of our broadside is conjectured from a similar broadside by Billing with a contemporary handwritten date of 1829 held by the National Library of Scotland. The verses on that copy end with "God save the King." Ours ends with "God save the Queen," so we assume it was printed in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, which began in 1837. OCLC locates no copies. London, 1829. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2" (ilustrador).
