Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Town Child's Alphabet, verses by Eleanor Farjeon, designs by David Jones, pub. The Poetry Bookshop, 1924, 1st edition. Quarto. Stiff card covers, illustrated to the front panel. A - Z 'Artist' to 'Zoo man' by way of 'Muffin Man' and 'Queue Girl' ('waits all day to get a good seat for the play ) each letter illustrated in b/w with most further coloured in blue/green. Two pages at the rear of the Poetry Bookshop's catalogue. A very nice example of this title, the covers with mild tanning, the spine with a small area of paper loss at the foot, and an even smaller area at the top. Clean and bright throughout with no blemish or inscription. The drawings clearly show the influence of Eric Gill, with whom Jones had spent some time at Ditchling, in Sussex. Monro also published, the same year, The Country Child's Alphabet, illustrated by a very young Michael Rothenstein. Jones [1895-1974] had served in WW1 and came out of that experience with what we would now call PTSD, then known as 'shell shock'. His experiences in the war - he spent more time on the front line than any other British writer - led, eventually to his epic poem In Parenthesis (1937). But the book also showcases the talent of the under-appreciated Eleanor Farjeon. Her verses manage to skilfully avoid sentimentality and in something like the 'Queue Girl' offer a glimpse into a melancholy life. Her verses for the 'Roadmender' will strike a chord with anyone - that is to say, everyone - who has been frustrated by endless roadworks. …
