Sie leidet noch immer, aber die von Ihnen verordneten Pulver sind ein ganz unschätzbares Linderungsmittel, das ihr nicht allein für eine Nacht Ruhe u Schlaf sichert, sondern auch die Schmerzen auch noch bis in die letzte Hälfte des folgenden Tages hinein, beschwichtigt. Ich scheue die zu oft wiederholte Anwendung dieses Mittels, da ich fürchte daß seine Wirkung dadurch geschwächt werden wird []". - Infolge eines Sturzes seit ihrem 4. Lebensjahr gehbehindert, mußte sich die Tochter des Juristen und Staatssekretärs in Güstrow David Tarnow und seiner Frau Amalie Justine geb. von Holstein nach dem Verlust des Familienvermögens ihren Lebensunterhalt als Erzieherin verdienen. Nach Aufenthalten in Rügen, Wismar und auf Rankendorf und St. Petersburg leitete sie zusammen mit Amalia Schoppe eine Erziehungsanstalt für Mädchen in Hamburg und ging 1820 nach Dresden. Später war sie vor allem als Übersetzerin aus dem Englischen und Französischen tätig und lebte seit 1841 in Dessau. Zu ihrem Freundeskreis zählten Ernst Moritz Arndt, Ludwig Tieck, Christoph August Tiedge, die Gräfin Egloffstein und Friedrich Maximilian von Klinger, auch war sie mit August von Kotzebue und Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué bekannt. Ihr Werk besteht aus vorwiegend sentimentalen Frauenromanen und -erzählungen (darunter 'Natalie, ein Beitrag zur Geschichte des weiblichen Herzens', 1812, und 'Heloise', 1826); daneben übersetzte sie George Sand und Honoré de Balzac ins Deutsche.
