Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condición: Very Good. This detailed statistical table from the Annual Register for 1810 offers an early attempt to quantify crime across England and Wales. It records more than 7,000 individuals brought to trial, listing offences from larceny and burglary to forgery, riot, and murder, alongside the sentences imposed. Transportation dominates the punishments, with imprisonment, whipping, fines, and a small number of executions also noted. As a contemporary government derived return, it provides a rare, data driven snapshot of criminal justice during the Napoleonic War years, when economic strain shaped patterns of offending and prosecution. An authentic standalone chart, extracted from a larger volume. Not a reprint or reproduction, but an original work in its own right. Preserved in a modern card cover, prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 13 x 20 cms. Category: Annual Register; Cosmo Books : 29 years on ABE, 47 years taking care of customers. A bookseller you can rely on.

  • Imagen del vendedor de Trials and Polemics of the Popish Plot, 1679 : The Proceedings Against Whitebread, Harcourt, Fenwick, Gavan, Turner, and Langhorn ; Together with the Trials of Wakeman, Corker, Marshal ; and the Conduct, Speeches, and Alleged Conspiracies of the Accused. An Original Trial Report from Cobbett's State Trials, part of the great 19th-century archive of courtroom history. a la venta por Cosmo Books

Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condición: Very Good. This remarkable group of trial reports and polemical pamphlets offers a concentrated lens on the fevered climax of the Popish Plot prosecutions in 1679. At its heart are the trials and executions of five Jesuit priests; Thomas Whitebread, William Harcourt, John Fenwick, John Gavan, and Anthony Turner, accused of conspiring to assassinate King Charles II. Their proceedings at the Old Bailey, alongside that of Richard Langhorn, a Catholic barrister, became emblematic of the era's volatile mix of religious paranoia, political opportunism, and judicial theatre. Supplementary tracts, animadversions, rebuttals, and spiritual accounts reveal the contested legacy of these men, with voices both condemning and defending their final speeches and conduct at Tyburn. The surrounding trials of Sir George Wakeman and several Benedictine monks, show the breadth of the campaign against Catholic clergy. Meanwhile, Chief Justice Scroggs's courtroom speech and the pamphlet skirmishes that followed reflect the judiciary's struggle to maintain authority amid a pamphlet war that threatened to undermine public trust. Together, these documents form a vivid archive of the legal, religious, and rhetorical machinery of persecution at the height of the Plot. 196 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 15 x 25 cms. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Octavo; This item may require more postage than the rates shown for delivery outside the UK. If extra postage is required we will contact you before processing your order and you will be given the details and option to decline the extra cost. 2 woodcuts, the first 215 x 350 mm. the second, 130 x 220 mm. These woodcuts are probably cut from contemporary execution broadsides. According to contemporary accounts, the mother, common law wife, brother and others made up a party "to see the last of old Tom" and when it was over retired to a public house to make a day of it.

The Only Known Copy [Broadside]. [Executions]. Austin, William Henry [c.1789-1825]. Edmunds, John [c.1801-1825]. Jasper, Richard William [c.1800-1825]. The Sorrowful Lamentation of Wm. Henry Austin, John Edmunds, And Richard Wm. Jasper, Who are Ordered for Execution on Tuesday Next. [London]: Birt, Printer, 1825. 9-1/2" x 7-1/2" (24.3 x 19.2 cm) broadside, edges untrimmed, mounted to later 10" x 8" (25.7 x 20.2 cm) backing sheet. Text in double columns separated by thin rule below headline. Negligible light soiling, a few tiny holes (no loss to text), small spots of adhesive or residue to verso. Rare. $1,250. * This broadside records the outcome of a Privy Council meeting to discuss the fates of fourteen prisoners held at Newgate under sentence of death after their conviction at the Old Bailey October sessions in 1825. "His Majesty was graciously pleased to respite" eleven of the prisoners, including two teenage girls convicted of housebreaking and a gang of seven convicted of larceny. Our broadside is careful to note the duration of the meeting ("upwards of an hour and a half"), reflecting the important optics of the prerogative of mercy in the age of the Bloody Code. William Henry Austin, a postal employee who stole a letter, John Edmunds, convicted of horse theft, and Richard William Jasper, who forged a bill of exchange, were not so lucky. All three were hanged on December 27, 1825. A seven-stanza ballad of typically dubious quality commemorates their sentence. This broadside appears to be unrecorded. No copies located on OCLC or Library Hub. Not at Harvard, Oxford or the British Library.

London: J. V. Quick; and Sold by J. Pitts, [1831]. Ilustrador. London: J. V. Quick; and Sold by J. Pitts, [1831]. Extremely Rare Broadside Account of the Trial and Execution of the "London Burkers" [Broadside]. [Executions]. Bishop, John [d.1831]. Williams, Thomas [d.1831]. May, [James]. Trial, Execution, And Confession of the Burkers, On Monday, December 5th, 1831 for the Murder of Charles Fariere, An Italian Boy. [London]: Printed by J[ohn] V[andenburg] Quick, 42, Bowling Green Lane, Clerkenwell; And Sold by J. Pitts, Great St. Andrew Street, 7 Dials, [1831]. 15" x 10" (38 x 25.5 cm) broadside, text in three columns below headline and three woodcut vignettes of the defendants. Light browning, minor edgewear, a few faint stains, horizontal and vertical fold lines with slight creasing along them, clean tear to central horizontal fold affecting text without loss to legibility. $1,750. * Known as the "London Burkers," John Bishop, Thomas Williams, and James May were "resurrection men" whose grim trade directly mirrored the murderous exploits of Edinburgh's William Burke and William Hare. Rather than relying solely on grave robbing, the trio began luring vulnerable individuals to their home, where they were drugged and drowned to preserve the corpses for anatomical sale. Their enterprise collapsed in early November 1831 following the "Italian Boy Murder"-so named because the victim was mistakenly believed to be a missing Italian street musician. When the suspects attempted to sell the remarkably fresh corpse to King's College, an astute anatomist noticed the lack of burial soil and suspicious trauma, promptly alerting the authorities. The subsequent investigation uncovered evidence of multiple murders, culminating in a sensational trial. On December 3, 1831, all three were convicted; Bishop and Williams were hanged two days later before a crowd of thousands, while May's sentence was commuted to transportation to Van Diemen's Land. This highly sensational broadside reflects the intense public fascination and moral panic surrounding the case. Printed immediately following the executions, the text assumes a contemporary readership already intimately familiar with the gruesome details. It provides a vivid contemporary account of the trial and final executions, augmented by a poignant, purported farewell letter from Williams to his wife, and concludes with seven stanzas of moralizing cautionary verse. Extremely Rare. OCLC locat.
