The Oneida Community was a religious commune founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848 in Oneida, New York. The community believed that Jesus had already returned in AD 70, making it possible for them to bring about Jesus's millennial kingdom themselves, and be free of sin and perfect in this world, not just Heaven (a belief called Perfectionism). The Oneida Community practiced Communalism (in the sense of communal property and possessions), Complex Marriage, Male Continence, Mutual Criticism and Ascending Fellowship. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the Oneida Community, a 19th-century American religious colony established on the principles of Christianity and scientific race-improvement. The author, an insider with intimate knowledge of the group, provides a unique perspective on the community's unusual social and economic practices, including their controversial form of communal marriage known as 'complex marriage'. The book explores the motivations and beliefs that led to the formation of the community, the challenges they faced from both within and outside, and the ultimate decline and transformation of the group. Through this case study, the author raises profound questions about the nature of human relationships, the limits of social experimentation, and the tension between individual freedom and collective responsibility. The insights gained from this historical account offer valuable lessons for understanding the complexities of communal living and the ongoing search for alternative social models.
