Als einziges Kind von Alma und Selma Welt, geborene Silberstein, kam sie nach dem Tod der Mutter 1929 zu den Großeltern mütterlicherseits nach Ostrau und Ende 1939 zu ihrem Vater nach Wien. Sie entging damit der Deportation, der die gesamte Familie ihrer Mutter 1942 zum Opfer gefallen war. Vater und Tochter überlebten als rumänische Staatsangehörige in Wien. Sie emigrierte 1947 in die USA, wo sie nach dem Studium ab 1956 an der Universität von Massachusetts, ab 1960 an der Universität von Pittsburgh, ab 1967 am Monterey Institute of International Studies und seit 1985 am Amherst College Deutsch, Russisch und Komparatistik unterrichtete.
