Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Partially reinforced with gray cloth tape. Inscribed in pencil by an unnamed protege of Daniel Webster. The inscription incorporates one word of the printed title ("Eulogy") and reads, "I enjoyed the meeting of the 'Webster Historical Society,' appointed for Aug 17, 1883, by reading, in full this Eulogy of my beloved teacher!" 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Forty pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall but have moderate age toning. surface tearing near and along the spine (most noticeable on the front), and pencil annotation in bottom margin of Page 40. A Very Good copy. This is a transcription of a eulogy for the late Daniel Webster (1782-1852), the eminent American lawyer and politician. Webster served as a United States Representative, U.S. Senator, and the 14th and 19th U.S. Secretary of State. The eulogy was originally given by Edwin D. Sanborn, Professor of Latin at Dartmouth College, on December 29, 1852 before the students of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Sanborn begins by expressing words of mourning and laments that the world has lost a man who was a great "counselor" and "pacificator." Sanborn proceeds to commend Webster for his various qualities such as being a devout Christian, "his hatred of violence and cruelty," "his earnest devotion to the institutions of his country," "his love of liberal learning," "his cultivated taste," "his elevated aims in life," and "his intense scorn of all affectation, pretence [sic] and intrigue." Sanborn attributes Webster's upstanding character in adulthood to good parenting and an innate goodwill that was already apparent in his youth. Sanborn briefly recounts Webster's upbringing on the family farm. He associates Webster's love of nature and rural living with his virtuous character. He describes Webster's fondness of the outdoors and praises him for showing respectable qualities such as humility, obedience, and industriousness when he was a boy working on the farm. He continues his sketch of Webster's life and interweaves commendations of his character. For example, Sanborn highlights Webster's respect for his parents and relatives and respect for the law. Sanborn transitions to Webster's academic and literary qualities that featured in his career and adulthood. He commends Webster for being a "great scholar" and for his exceptional reading, writing, and speaking abilities. He describes Webster as a purposeful reader who frequently had a specific object in mind when reading upon a subject. He also compliments Webster for his thoroughness in researching subjects and making sure he was well-prepared for court cases. Sanborn highlights Webster's pacific state in court and portrays him as a mediator while others might be prone to argumentation. He also highlights Webster's last words which included a wish of "goodwill to men." Also discussed is Webster's social life and descriptions of how Webster was an affectionate, caring friend to many. He says of Webster toward the end of the eulogy, "He lived like a Christian patriot; he died like a Christian philosopher." A two-page Appendix in back reprints some letters by friends of Webster who speak highly of him.
