Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of oak galls, those curious growths that appear on oak trees. The author, an avid collector and researcher, takes the reader on a journey through the history of gall studies, showcasing how these growths were viewed by early naturalists and how their study has evolved over time. The book focuses particularly on the tiny insects called Cynipidae, which are responsible for creating many of the oak galls found in Britain. Through detailed descriptions and beautiful illustrations, the author explores the intricate relationship between these gall wasps and the oak trees they inhabit, revealing the complex mechanisms behind gall formation. The author not only examines the physical characteristics of galls, but also delves into their internal structure, discussing the unique layers of cells and pigments that give them their distinctive colours and textures. By studying the variations in gall shape, size, and position, the author sheds light on the impact of parasites, inquilines, and environmental factors on their development.
