The author was a great admirer of Walt Whitman and lived a life that was deeply inspired by his nature poetry. Ralph was a voracious reader and despite his illness, he was committed to a life of the mind and had a wide range of interests and knowledge. His writings are a reflection of his inquisitive nature and deep interests in history, politics, the human condition as well as his own mortality. He was also a big fan of Shakespeare and memorized passages that gave him comfort in his last days. Through the writings presented in this book, readers will gain a glimpse into the life and mind of a truly remarkable young man, whose pure intentions, intelligence, and resolve shone through despite the immense suffering he faced throughout his short life.
