Hardcover. Condición: Good. [Czech Realism] Bound in publisher's cloth. Hardcover. Library stamps and markings. Shelf wear. viii, 296 pages ; 23 cm. "Jan Neruda was a Czech journalist, writer, and poet. He is considered one of the most important representatives of Czech Realism and a crucial figure in the development of Czech li…terature. Neruda was influenced by the works of other realist writers, such as Honore de Balzac and Charles Dickens, as well as the Czech Revival movement, which sought to promote Czech language and culture. His writing contributed to the development of a distinct Czech literary voice and helped to shape the country's cultural identity. Today, Neruda's work remains relevant for its enduring portrayal of human nature and its sharp observations on society. His poetry continues to be read and appreciated for its wit, honesty, and timeless insights into the human condition.".

Paperback. Condición: Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. A very rare English edition of "Konec starých Äasů" translated by Edith Pargetter, best known these days for the "Cadfael" series of novels.Paperback in good condition. Slight tear to top of spine and rubbing to covers. Small amount of adhesive on bac…k cover where price label removed. The origin of "The End of the Old Times," whose structure rests on contradiction of its characters, external and internal, was a film script. This partly accounts for the literally three-dimensional vision of the characters and in particular of the main hero, Prince Megalrogov, an officer of the White Army. Megalrogov is a charming liar and imposter, and at the same time a kind of modern Münchhausen, and a personification of the fate of the majority of Russian Princes who emigrated in great numbers to Western Europe after the October Revolution. Nevertheless, the main asset of the work is the enchanting and carefree humour, intensified by the author's stylistic mastery.Vladislav VanÄura (1891-1942), by profession a doctor, one of the foremost Czech prose writers of the period between the First and the Second World Wars, enriched Czech literature in the first place by his masterly style and by the inventiveness of his language. On the other hand, the personality of this writer is inseparably linked with his progressive and humanistic credo, for which, too, Vladislav VanÄura was executed by the Nazi occupants of Czechoslovakia. Of VanÄura's work are most important: Picture from the History of the Bohemian Nation, in three volumes, The Baker Jan Marhoul, Markéta Lazarová, Arable Fields and Battlefields, The End of the Old Times, Three Rivers.
