CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 116th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, was recruited from among the Irish Americans of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the summer of 1862 and with St. Clair A. Mulholland as lieutenant colonel. At the end of August 1862, the regiment was ordered to report to Washington, D.C., and was assigned to the Irish Brigade, which was the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, Army of the Potomac. The 116th performed well at the Battle of Chancellorsville, where it helped rescue the 5th Maine Battery from capture. In this action, Mulholland earned a Medal of Honor. On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the 1st Division was sent into the Wheatfield to support the III Corps, where the 116th engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Caught in a crossfire, the division was forced to retreat. The 116th fought all through the Overland Campaign, where it continued to lose heavily in officers and men. Mulholland was wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House and again at the Battle of Cold Harbor. The 116th suffered heavy losses at the Siege of Petersburg. They finished the war with the Appomattox Campaign, and were mustered out in Alexandria and Washington in July 1865. The 116th Pennsylvania Infantry is recognized as a Fox 300 Fighting Regiment. Ever since the work of Jacob Burckhardt in the 19th century, the Renaissance has retained its unbroken grip on art historians and the general public. The completion of restoration work in the Sistine Chapel, which has shown Michelangelo's frescos in a new and more colourful light, has recently tightened that grip. And in these times of easy travel, almost anyone can see great Renaissance art on the spot, in the galleries and churches of Florence, Rome or Venice and the many other cities which are themselves the sites of some of the world's most breathtaking architectural achievements. This book aims to provide a thorough introduction to the Renaissance in Italy, accompanied with the finest illustrations. The works are the main thing: reinforced by an expert text, the reproductions provide a rich trove to guide the art lover through the field. Essays by various hands analyse these works, linking them to the history and ideas of the times and creating a carefully nuanced overall picture of the Renaissance. Certain key developments widely associated with the Renaissance are shown to have been the achievements of the late Middle Ages. The evolution of the chief genres of architecture, sculpture, painting and draughtsmanship is followed in detail. The individual artists and circumstances that prompted the most innovative developments are described. If the mythologized view of the Renaissance as an idealized Golden Age, a view established in the 19th century, is questioned in the course of this inquiry, there can still be no doubt that the manifest glorious accomplishments of the Renaissance richly deserve our admiration.
