First edition of the final major work by the soldier and philosopher. Fortin's work of political theory yokes together the public and the private, relating the development of government to the control of four essential vices: murder, theft, false witness, and adultery. The book mirrors contemporary attitudes towards marriage and… sexuality, and it has been read, as by Leslie Tuttle, as reflecting the social imperialism imposed on France's new North American colonies in the 1660s (p.79). As a soldier, Philippe Fortin de la Hoguette (1585-1668) fought in the French Wars of Religion and was present at the siege of La Rochelle in 1627. As a philosopher, he wrote several works of Catholic fideism, corresponded extensively with the Dupuy brothers, and smuggled many of Francis Bacon's manuscripts out of England after his death in 1626. Leslie Tuttle, Conceiving the Old Regime: Pronatalism and the Politics of Reproduction in Early Modern France, 2010. Octavo (166 x 113 mm) Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in manuscript, edges sprinkled in red and green. Woodcut vignette to title page, headpiece and initial. Lightly toned and with some natural creasing, front pastedown free, rear pastedown starting to free, minor browning to endpapers and content margins, occasional small mark: a very good copy in an attractive contemporary binding.

Philippe Fortin de la Hoguette (1585-1668) fought in the French Wars of Religion and was present at the siege of La Rochelle in 1627. In his spare time, he wrote several works of Catholic fideism, corresponded extensively with the Dupuy brothers, and smuggled many of Francis Bacon's manuscripts out of England after his death in 1626. Leslie Tuttle, Conceiving the Old Regime: Pronatalism and the Politics of Reproduction in Early Modern France, 2010. Octavo (172 x 112 mm). Woodcut vignette to title page, headpiece and initial. Contemporary mottled calf, spine lettered, panelled, and decorated in gilt, raised bands, edges sprinkled red and brown. Ink manuscript "Elem: Pol:" to upper edge. Remnants of shelf label to lower spine end. Light wear, loss to lower spine end, front joint cracked but holding firm, minor browning and foxing to endpapers and contents: a very good copy.

Er. Cons, inherited by his son J. E. Cons in 1818 and from him given in 1852 to his nephew, captain Ax. Fr. M. Lundeberg. Lundeberg has also recorded the births of his children and their height on the last leaf and rear endpaper. With the bookplate and signature of Gunnar Brusewitz. Schwerdt Hunting, hawking, shooting I:181. Souhart Bibliographie générale des ouvrages sur la chasse 636-637. Thiébaud Bibliographie des ouvrages français sur la chasse 408-409. Westwood & Satchell Bibliotheca piscatoria 180. Third edition of this celebrated work on the art of capturing game, fish and vermin with traps, nets and other means, first published in 1660. A second edition was published in 1668, a fourth in 1695, and this edition was reissued in 1700 with a cancel title page. The work is split into five books of which the last deals extensively with fishing. The striking and instructive woodcut illustrations show a variety of nets and traps. The plates are the same as appeared in the first edition. This edition includes for the first time the short 12-page "Traité tres-utile de la chasse" by Charles Strosse present at the end of the work. This work was to prove immensely popular and influential, inspiring the work of many subsequent authors, notably Liger in his "Amusements de la campagne", and who reproduced the first part of "Les ruses" without alteration, according to Westwood & Satchell. Michael Törnflycht (1683-1738) was a military, civil servant, and country gentleman. Under King Charles XII he took part in the Battle of Poltava 1709 and the siege of Fredrikshall 1718. Carl Fredric Piper (1700-1770) was his nephew and one of Sweden's foremost book collectors in his time. His extensive library at Ängsö castle was inherited by his son Adolf Ludvig Piper (1750-1795), married to Sophie von Fersen. Forester Johan Cons, or Conz, (1739-1818) was born in Strassbourg and lived in Dyvik by Ängsö. His daughter Hedvig Sophia Cons (1785-1864) was married to the factor at Ängsö Johan Petter Lundeberg. Their son was Axel Fredrik Marcus Lundeberg (1809-1873). Brusewitz's signature is dated 1975. Laid in is also a catalogue clipping from Hagelin Rare Books, where Brusewitz bought this book.

"Ingenieur-Mechanicien pour les Globes et Spheres" A pair of terrestrial and celestial globes, each with 12 hand-coloured engraved paper gores over papier mâché and plaster sphere, varnished, paste-board meridian ring, wooden horizon ring, raised by four quadrant supports, mounted on an ebonized turned wood table stand. Together… with an armillary sphere, containing globe with 12 hand-coloured engraved gores, over a papier mâché and plaster sphere, varnished wood, raised on four quadrant supports, with ebonised turned wood table stand. Biography Jean Fortin (1750-1831) was a scientific instrument-maker born in Picardy, France. Chiefly remembered for designing a barometer that ensured more accurate readings, he also produced celestial atlases, scales and was commissioned by the French royal family to make globes. He made terrestrial and celestial globes of 320 and 220mm (12 and 8.75 inches) diameter, as well as a terrestrial globe of 55mm (2.25 inches) to go into his armillary spheres. Fortin operated in Paris, with a shop in the Rue de la Harpe, where he referred to himself as "Ingenieur-Mecanicien pour les Globes et Spheres". He is also known for publishing the new celestial atlas of John Flamsteed (1646-1719) in 1762, which was highly influential as a source for celestial cartography throughout the rest of the century. His business was continued by his son Augustin, grandson Michel and great-grandson Augustin. Geography The prime meridian, which runs through the Canary Islands at Ferro, the equator, and the ecliptic are all graduated and labelled. The ecliptic includes the signs of the zodiac. Australia and New Zealand are drawn according to the discoveries of Abel Tasman; a dotted line marks a hypothetical northeast, east, and south coast of Australia. There are no tracks of voyages shown, but the lands seen by Quiros and David are marked. The two demi-meridian rings mark the latitude and longitude of the major cities of the world. North America extends almost to the north pole, and is apparently attached to Asia in the west and Greenland in the east. However, California is shown as a peninsula. Astronomy The equator is graduated and labelled "Cercle de L'Equateur" and "Cercle Equinoctial". The ecliptic is graduated; it is labelled "Ligne Eclipt" and "la Zodiaque" and provided with the symbols of the signs of the zodiac. There are labels for the "Artique" along the north polar circle "the Tropique de Capricorn", "the Tropique de Cander", "the Pol. d'eclipt. Australle", "the Colure des Aequinoxe" and "the Colure des Solstique". There is a magnitude table which is labelled "Gr. et Figure des Etoilles". The 48 Ptolemaic constellations are shown as well as the non-Ptolemaic constellations Antinous, La Chevelure de Berenice, La Croix, and La Colombe. The 12 southern constellations of Plancius are depicted. Armillary The Ptolemaic armillary sphere shows the cosmos with the earth at its centre. The complex device is made of moving circles: a meridian surmounted by an hour circle with metal pointer and an internal ring structure of polar circles, tropics and equator, joined by an equinoctial and a solstitial colure and surrounded by a planar zodiac band. These elements surround a rotating terrestrial globe, and a revolving sun and moon of flat paste-board discs, horizon band with calendar and zodiac. The four quadrant supporting the horizon ring give the latitude and longitude of major cities throughout the world.
