Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Oceania at the Tropenmuseum is not in the first place a book on art from Oceania, but rather a treatise on the coming into existence and growth of a well-known Oceanic collection, which started at the beginning of the 20th century with the bringing together of the collections of the Colonial… Museum in the Dutch provincial town of Haarlem and the ethnographic collection of Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo. The objects were, then and later on, brought together by early explorers, travellers, scientific expeditions, missionaries, Dutch government officials, ethnologists and collectors, most of them within the context of Dutch colonial presence in New Guinea, from where the majority of objects originate. During the last hundred years the intellectual approach to the collection changed from evidences of cultures in far-away places to the cultural heritage of world citizens, whose objects of art and material culture has been amassed during the colonial period of Western history. This richly illustrated book emphasizes this historical context and the way the objects were collected and presented to the public until today. Discusses the collections of the Tropenmuseum and the histories and stories that accompany them. This book elucidates the often hidden backgrounds of a museum collection, also discussing objects within their original context, social histories and their contemporary meaning. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Cloth. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 224 pages. Hardcover, bound in orange paper covered boards with a canvas covered spine. Texts in English. 254 illustrations, 110 of which are in color. Very light shelfwear rubbing to the covers of the dustjacket, and a light crease to the front free endpaper, b…ut otherwise in fine condition, with a solid binding and clean, unmarked interior. There is a darkish line (possibly glue?), along the inside gutter of both front and rear cover. Every copy I have had of this title has had this same issue, making me think it is inherent to the production. Beyond an examination of the cultures and their sculpture, the authors investigate the effects of key explorers and anthropologists who brought works to Europe where they had a great influence on European Surrealism.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 71 pp., illustrations, bibliography. At the end of the eighteenth century the Frenchman Bruny d'Entrecasteaux sailed the western part of the Pacific Ocean. O the return voyage, this famous expedition visited the intermediate port-of-call on Java making use of the harb…our facilities of the Dutch East Indies. The senior Dutch VOC official, S. C. Nederburgh, temporarily stationed on Java at the time, was able to acquire a number of the objects collected uring the expedition, and that is why part of the Bruy d'Entrecasteaux collection ended up in a Dutch museum. The objects, eleven clubs, a spear and a food pounder deserve more attention than they have received until now. They were acquired by the French expedition on several Melanesian and Polynesian islands in 1792 and 1793, some thirteen years after the English explorer James Cook's third and final voyage. They therefore number among the oldest Oceanic collections found in ethnographic museums in the West. The authors have been able to trace, in great detail, the history of acquisition of these, and related, important and interesting objects now stored in Dutch and French ethnographic institutions. Van Duuren and Mostert have been able to trace, in great detail, the history of acquisition of these -- and related -- important and interesting objects now stored in Dutch and French ethnographic institutions. Such serendipity is extremely rare for museum objects acquired more than two hundred years ago.

Añadir al carrito39 pp.; 15 illustrations. Leiden, 2022. Pbk. After more than 100 years, a long-lost keris resurfaced in the Netherlands: the legendary "Knaud kris". In literature, this item was named after Charles Knaud, who acquired it at the end of the 19th century as a gift from a Javanese ruler. This extra-ordinary keris won an award during… an art and craft exhibition held at Batavia (1884), was cast in plaster by the museum of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences and discussed by the renowned Indologist dr. N.J. Krom, Head of the Archaeological Service in the Dutch East Indies, in his standard work (1920) on the art of ancient Java. The Knaud keris is now on display at the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum, where it is kept on a long-term loan. This publication is the first to present the historico-cultural uniqueness of this keris along with its adornments and date. It is comprehensively dealt with beginning with its anecdotal acquisition by C. Knaud on Java up to its discovery in the vault of a Dutch bank. The rich symbolism and mythological scenes are discussed in detail, as is the laboratory research into the metal and metal alloy utilised when forging the blade. An analysis confirms N.J. Krom's presumption it is not only a very special artefact created in East Java during the 14th century but also that, considering its history and style, it must be linked to the temple site of Panataran which dates from the Majapahit era.
