The invasions and deprivations of the Hundred Years War, in spite of a lull of thirty-five years, had weakened and disrupted the country. Internal rebellion and popular revolt against unendurable taxes created constant ferment. Charles VI's periodic fits of lunacy exposed the crown to contention, and the disunity stemming from the rivalry of the Burgundians and the Armagnacs divided France and contributed to her defeat by the English at Agincourt.
