The Count du Moncel was a French aristocrat who became a dedicated scientific explorer and inventor, whose main discovery was the foundation for Edison's carbon transmitter. However, his chief work was writing about electrical science and in this book, he summarizes all the knowledge to date (1879) available on the telephone, microphone and phonograph (unaccountably leaving out the first inventor of the telephone, Reis. ) Beautifully illustrated with figs. Demonstrating the technical aspects of the science. Dark gold cloth covers are worn and damp-lightened at front/back edges. Spine is darkened but legible, spine tips chipped away. Interior Victorian brown endpapers fragile with price sticker scar, scientific library stamps to a number of pages, hinges cracking, binding bit fragile, pages clean with just occasional foxing, one page has old clipping shadow. A fragile copy but one with nice provenance. ; Ex-Library; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 277 pages.

"The earth as a conductor of electricity and absorber of electric charges ; currents between two earth-plates of the same or of different material" (Wheeler Gift Cat.). Physicien et ingénieur, Théodose Achille Louis, vicomte du Moncel (1821-1884) obtint, en 1855, une médaille de première classe à l'Exposition universelle pour ses différentes inventions ; en 1874, il devint membre de l'Institut (Académie des sciences). Cachet ex-libris d'une bibliothèque monastique sur la page de titre et un feuillet de garde. Le CCFr mentionne 5 exemplaires (Arras, Bordeaux, Caen, Meudon Observatoire et Paris Saclay). En 1827, Georg Simon Ohm (1789-1854), dans Die galvanishe Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet établit les lois fondamentales du courant électrique : loi de la longueur, loi de la section et loi des courants dérivés, aujourd'hui plus généralement connue sous nom de loi d'Ohm. L'édition française, publiée 23 ans après l'édition originale allemande fut donnée par Jean-Mothée Gaugain. Le premier texte de Du Moncel, inventeur prolifique d'appareils électriques et un des premiers et meilleurs vulgarisateurs français sur le sujet, débute par une exposition des lois d'Ohm. Son second texte, ici en quatrième édition (la première avait paru en 1855) constitue, à l'époque, une étude particulièrement précoce sur la bobine que Ruhmkorff inventa en 1851. L'ouvrage est richement illustré. Bon exemplaire de ce recueil historique intéressant, portant sur le premier contreplat, l'ex-libris de James Boyd Gilmore, et le cachet, annulé, de l'Institut Catholique de Paris.
