Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of the Canons Regular, an order of priests who lived in community, following the Rule of Saint Augustine. The book traces the history of the Canons Regular from their origins in the 11th century to their present-day existence. Along the way, the book explores the Canons Regular's role in the development of Western Christianity, their contributions to learning and culture, and their unique approach to religious life. The Canons Regular were founded by a group of priests in northern Italy who sought to live a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They were inspired by the writings of Saint Augustine, who believed that Christians should live in community and share their possessions. The Canons Regular quickly spread throughout Europe, and by the 12th century they had become one of the most important religious orders in the Church. The Canons Regular played a major role in the development of Western Christianity. They founded schools and universities, and they helped to spread the Christian faith throughout Europe. They also played a significant role in the development of canon law, which is the body of law that governs the Catholic Church. In addition to their contributions to the Church, the Canons Regular also made significant contributions to learning and culture. They were among the first to establish libraries and scriptoria, and they played a major role in the preservation and transmission of classical learning. They also produced a number of important works of theology, philosophy, and literature. The Canons Regular continue to be an important part of the Catholic Church today. They live in communities throughout the world, and they continue to follow the Rule of Saint Augustine. They are dedicated to serving the Church and to living a life of prayer, study, and service. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the history, spirituality, and contributions of the Canons Regular. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Christianity, the development of religious life, or the role of the Canons Regular in Western culture. An excellent, well-preserved copy with superb and richly detailed engravings. Forty-five plates to document one of the first museums and libraries, still shimmering with Baroque wunderkammer flair. A sumptuous and richly illustrated description of the Cabinet de curiosités and library of the Abbey of Sainte Geneviève in Paris; founded n the 6th century, it was one of the earliest Parisian cabinets that blended erudition, material culture, and library practice, placing Sainte-Geneviève among the great centers of learning before the Revolution. It is today across the square from the Panthéon, administered by La Sorbonne. During the Mediaeval ages the Library was already famous throughout Europe; after some difficult times during the Wars of Religions, the library was brought back to life beginning in 1619, during the reign of Louis XIII, by Cardinal Francois de Rochefoucauld, who donated six hundred volumes from his personal collection. In 1673, Claude Du Molinet became librarian and founded a small museum, the Cabinet of Curiosities, with Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities, medals, rare minerals and stuffed animals, within the library. By 1687 the library possessed twenty thousand books, and four hundred manuscripts. This volume, curated by Du Molinet himself, represents one of the most important testimonies to early modern collecting and the origins of museography. The first part of the volume is devoted to antiquities, while the second focuses on natural history. It presents a comprehensive survey of the abbey?s holdings. The plates, engraved in fine taille-douce by Franz Ertinger, depict the grand library and its cabinets filled with rare birds, fossils, coral branches, medals, engraved stones, minerals, and other marvels.
