Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. The sole UK printing published by The Scolar Press, London / LaNana Creek Press, Nacogdoches, Texas in 1999. Number '145' of a limited edition of 210 numbered copies (of which 200 were for sale) signed by Omar Pound and the designer and printer, Charles Jones. The BOOK is in Fine condition in a Fine matching slipcase, with a printed title label pasted to the spine. Charles Jones printed 200 copies on a Vandercrook Universal III press, on Magnani Biblios mould made white wove paper. The edition is hand-bound in Harmatan's tan leather with Japanese bookcloth covered boards, and slipcased. In the late 1930s, Ezra Pound planned an edition of the 'Cantos' to be illustrated by his wife, the artist Dorothy Shakespear. She created the designs, but for various reasons, the edition was never published. This volume presents them in a limited edition based on a selection of pages from the 'Cantos'. The selection has been made by Omar Pound, the son of Dorothy Shakespear and Ezra Pound. The edition has been designed by the LaNana Creek Press' printer, Charles Jones, and reflects the style and generosity of materials and processes that were the hallmark of private press publishing in the 1920s and 1930s. A very handsome production. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Añadir al carrito185/210 COPIES signed by Omar S. Pound (who contributes the biographical note on his mother Dorothy Shakespear) and Charles D. Jones (the book's designer and printer), printed on Magnani Biblios Mouldmade white wove paper, each Canto with historiated initial, the letter itself printed in red, & numerous further monochrome decorations all by Shakespear, pp. [102], folio, original quarter tan morocco with red Japanese silk boards, cover with black stamp featuring artist and author's initials, matching slipcase with printed label to spine, fine. Around fifty Dorothy Shakespear designs published here for the first time, the majority for a new edition of the Cantos, following on from the initials which she provided for A Draft of XXX Cantos issued by the Hours Press in 1930. Owing to the Second World War, the project was never completed and it is to the credit of the two presses and all involved with the publication that these designs in 'an emphatically modern style, one invoking the angularity and bold simplicity of Vorticism and the calligraphic sweep of Chinese ideographs' have now seen the publishing light of day. They are 'eminently well suited to the expressive embellishment of the quintessentially modern text they were designed to illuminate.' (David A. Lewis, Preface) Dorothy Shakespear was the daughter of Olivia Shakespear, novelist and friend - briefly, the lover - of W.B. Yeats; it was she who introduced the latter to Ezra Pound, whom Dorothy married in 1914. Though a manifestly talented artist, one of only a few women to participate in the short-lived Vorticist movement that her husband had formulated, Shakespear never exhibited; her work, in a public sense, was largely restricted to cover-designs and illustrations for Pound's projects - and her energy was in general subordinated to his requirements, in literary, business and health matters, through good times and bad. Their marriage endured, though his mental and physical decline corresponded with their progressive estrangement.

Añadir al carritoPound was related to the Busha family through the marriage of his first cousin once removed Ida Lillian Pound (1858-1949) to Charles Thomas Busha (see 'Ezra and Dorothy Pound: Letters in Captivity, 1945-1946, ed. Omar Pound and Robert Spoo, 1999). The two letters are each 2pp., 4to. Both in fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Both closely typed on both sides, with a few autograph emendations; the second letter with an autograph postscript. 'Tommy', who at the time of the first letter is serving with the United States armed forces, is also referred to by his nickname 'Toppie'. ONE (18 May 1945). A long gossipy letter, packed with family news, concluding: 'Ezra Pound is to be brot [sic] to U.S.A. to stand trial for treason, for just why, I cannot tell you. He is supposed to have talked over the Rome Radio against the U.S.A. I think that he made the same remarks that Hoover and other Republican leaders made against the new deal and after that country of Italy joined with Germany those remarks weren't free speech as we call it here. However, I have yet to know just what the real charge is that is to bring him here for trial. Aunt Alice Robertson wrote the other day as if he had been in hiding and was just found, said she saw his picture and a news item to that effect in a Montana paper but I did not see anything. His father died over there in 40 I think and she, his mother wrote me that the American consulate wanted her to go to Lisbon and take passage for U.S.A. but she said if she came, there was no home for her here. Omar, Ezra's only child [Omar Shakespear Pound (1926-2010)] lives with his grandmother Shakespeare [sic, for the novelist Olivia Shakespear (1863-1938)] in London or near there, always has and I wish I could hear what happened to Cousin Isabelle, Ezra's mother. I visited her in Philadelphia and she is surely sweet. About eighty three now. I must get busy at once on some files. Thanks for letter and do keep them coming. Love from | Aunt Beulah'. Other topics include: V. E. Day and 'the Chinese retreat from Foochow'; a visit from 'Aunt Helen'; 'Mabel'; 'Ford and Bobby'; 'Bea's card'; the sale by 'Alice Helen and her husband' of 'their home in Seattle'; 'David Busha Granley'; 'Ida', who is at 'Treasure Island, or rather at Almeda', TWO (19 August 1947): Written in the same style as One. Begins with news of a communication from Pound's wife the artist Dorothy Pound (née Shakespear, 1886-1973): 'Your letter was such a happy surprise. I had been wondering about you, if you were vacationing or going to summer school, and since Dorothy Pound's last note stated that Omar was in Hamilton College, I had wondered if you two cousins might meet. You will have a lot of fun, sort of catching up on family history. And Dorothy has said that it is possible that sometime she and Omar might come to see me, so we will keep this trip that you and he may have in mind. If he gets out here, he will love the country and later bring his mother. Right now, I have been looking for a note from her telling me if Omar's grandmother has arrived from Italy, or a note from Isabella herself telling me if her plans to come are shaping up. Since Mother has not been writing, I have corresponded with the "Italy Pounds" myself []'. She continues on the topics of Homer's pension, and a letter she has received 'from Ezra from Elizabeth's Hospital', which she has forwarded to 'Dorothy, Omar's mother'. She discusses a photograph she has of Omar, taken 'when he was a small tot': 'Aunt Isabelle has told me so much about him, I feel as if he is one of my own circle of adopted sons'. She discusses his actual relationship to her and the recipient, concluding: 'Anyway, even if the cousin-ship is not close, you can be real buddies at that.' She reminisces on an 'Easter vacation with Homer and Isabelle in Philadelphia' when she was young. She continues with family news concerning 'Uncle Pat'; 'The girls'; 'Aunt Bea'; and 'the original Busha name [] "Boucher"'.

Two pieces of artwork by Ezra Pound's wife, the painting a more finished work, though the roofscape has a Vorticist feel by dint of the geometric arrangement of its subject - the sheet was presented to poet Michael Alexander in the 1960s, as per his note in the corner of the pencil drawing. Alexander had first visited Pound in 1962, to ask if he would accept the dedication of his translations of 'The Earliest English Poems', and was a regular visitor (in Rapallo and Venice) over the following decade.

Añadir al carrito20 x 25 cm, within mount. Framed and glazed. Some slight fading, a handful of small, light spots of foxing. Daughter of Olivia Shakespear and wife of Ezra Pound, Dorothy Shakespear is probably best known for her vorticist binding designs for the 'Catholic Anthology' and Pound's 'Ripostes'. She also contributed to the second issue of 'Blast', illustrated B. Cyril Windeler's 'Elimus', and drew the initials for 'A Draft of XXX Cantos', published by the Hours Press in 1930. Later that decade, she created designs for a further selection of the 'Cantos' but war led to the project being abandoned. They were eventually published in 'Shakespear's Pound : illuminated Cantos' by Dorothy and Ezra's son, Omar, in 1999. Despite being an accomplished artist, Dorothy Shakespear regarded herself as an amateur and didn't exhibit her work, with the result that her son was able to donate over twelve hundred works by her to the Wellin Museum at Hamilton College, New York. A further consequence is that almost nothing by her has ever appeared for sale. The watercolour above is closely related to another in the Wellin, which is dated on the verso, 'Old Nice -1919?' Ours came from the collection of Edith Madge, an Englishwoman who taught music in China and India, and bears her inscription on the back of the frame: 'This water colour is one of several given to me by the painter herself, Mrs Dorothy Pound (wife of the famous American poet Ezra Pound), whom I have known since 1925 when we all lived in Rapallo, Italy.' The two women remained friends until Shakespear's death, in 1973.
