Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Copyright August 1, 1938. 244 pp. Original light-brown cloth, ruled in blind on both boards and lettered in gilt on the spine. Rubricated title page and decorative red initial letters. Dedicated "to the School of Philosophy in the Modern World," with a one-page introductory quotation by Manly P. Hall. Although no publisher is stated on the title page, later records of Hall's Philosophical Research Society explicitly identify Stone of Destiny as one of the occasional books produced on the PRS press for close associates. A scarce esoteric philosophical novel set initially in fourth-century B.C. Phoenicia, following a narrative through Pythagorean teachings, ancient religion, symbolism and the legendary Stone of Destiny. Chapters include The Temple of Melkarth, The Winged Globe of Egypt, Symbol of the Radiant, Soaring Spirit, The Holy Lotus, The Music of the Spheres, Intuition, the Guiding Star of the Soul, and the culminating Stone of Destiny. The attribution of authorship is particularly interesting. Library/catalog records have attributed "Grove Donner" to Florence Harvey, while a currently recorded copy is actually signed "Mrs. Florence Harvey" directly above the printed author name "Grove Donner," unusually strong physical evidence connecting Harvey with the pseudonym. A later PRS account independently describes Grove Donner as the pen name of a woman who had spent years researching the sacred stone and calls the work a fictionalized treatment of Pythagoras. Very Good condition. Binding remains square and secure with clean, remarkably fresh interior leaves, with the exception of some creasing. Brown cloth shows general rubbing/handling, light edge wear, several small pale surface spots and marks, more noticeable mottled spotting toward the lower rear board, and wear/fraying at the spine ends and upper rear corner. Gilt spine lettering remains readable though somewhat dulled. Endpapers clean. No other ownership markings are found. No dust jacket present. A jacket was evidently issued - another surviving first-edition copy is currently described with a damaged original jacket. The understated 1938 imprint conceals an interesting connection to Manly P. Hall's Philosophical Research Society. A later PRS historical account recalls that, in addition to printing Hall's books, its press occasionally produced works for close friends and specifically names Stone of Destiny, describing "Grove Donner" as a pen name and the author as a woman who devoted years to researching the sacred coronation stone. That evidence, together with Hall's prominent introductory quotation and the book's dedication to a "School of Philosophy in the Modern World," places the volume firmly within Hall's Los Angeles esoteric publishing circle. I found a 1927 academic citation to an Anna A. Cattell who wrote a master's thesis on collateral reading in secondary-school U.S. history courses, but I have not established that she is the same Anna A. Cattell represented by this bookplate, so I would not claim the identification in the listing. Provenance: With the striking pictorial ex-libris of Anna A. Cattell, very likely Anna Ashburner Cattell, California educator and traveler. Cattell completed a 1927 master's thesis at the University of Southern California on collateral reading in secondary-school history instruction. Contemporary newspaper accounts identify a Los Angeles teacher named Anna Cattell who subsequently taught at a girls' school in Albania and personally met King Zog I. Earlier San Francisco directories record Anna A. Cattell in the household of prominent civil engineer William Ashburner Cattell, whose biographical record names a daughter Anna Ashburner Cattell. Taken together, these records make the identification compelling, although definitive documentary confirmation of the bookplate owner's identity has not yet been located.…
