Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) is best known as the "father of liberal Protestant theology," largely on the strength of his massive work of systematic theology, The Christian Faith. It is universally recognized that Schleiermacher grounded his theological work in an innovative and historically important understanding of religion in general, and that the influence of his thought about religion has extended beyond the boundaries of theology. In this book, Andrew Dole presents a new account of Schleiermacher's theory of religion. His purpose is to challenge a deeply entrenched tradition that characterizes Schleiermacher's account of religion is "subjective" or "individualistic." Dole argues that Schleiermacher integrates the individualistic side of religion with a set of claims about its social dynamics, and that this takes place within a broader understanding of all events in the world as the product of a universal, law-governed "causal nexus." Properly understood, says Dole, Schleiermacher's account of religion is an early and important example of a combination of theology and the "scientific" study of religion. By calling attention to this fact, Dole hopes to correct the historical record and stimulate interest in Schleiermacher's work outside the field of theological studies.

Schleiermacher is now regarded as an influential figure in the history of Christian thought, theories and methods in religious studies, and hermeneutics. The German-language critical edition of his work beginning in 1980, Schleiermacher Kritische Gesamtausgabe, and English translations of key portions of his corpus beginning in the late nineteenth century, have allowed scholars to investigate the richness of his thought. German scholars have often focusedon Schleiermacher's ties to early modern philosophy, his aesthetics, hermeneutics, and theory of religion, while English-speaking scholars have often focused on the theological influences and implications ofSchleiermacher's work. Over the last 30 years, both German and Anglophone scholars have been at work translating and analyzing key texts. This Handbook gathers authoritative interpretations of Schleiermacher's work from both German and English-speaking scholars, bringing together the best that Schleiermacher scholarship has to offer. The chapters are divided into three parts. The first part offers a clear and nuanced understanding of Schleiermacher's own historical andintellectual context. The second part presents a close analysis of the structure and content of Schleiermacher's thought, in relation both to questions of method and particular theological themes and tobroader inquiries in philosophy and the humanities. The third part provides an examination of the reception of his thought and of its contemporary implications for theology and the study of religion. This Handbook presents authoritative interpretations of Schleiermacher's work from both German and English-speaking scholars. Topics covered include Schleiermacher's historical and intellectual context, the structure and content of Schleiermacher's theology and philosophy, and the reception of his thought.
