Bisher stand die ukrainische Moderne im Schatten der russischen. Dabei waren von den 1910er bis zu d…en 1930er Jahren neben Moskau und St. Petersburg bzw. Leningrad auch Kiew, Charkiw und Odessa wichtige Knotenpunkte der Kunst und Kultur der Avantgarde. Dort fanden bedeutende Ausstellungen statt, die Impulse für neue Kunstrichtungen gaben. Unter den Absolventen der Kiewer Kunstschule schlugen nicht wenige später eine internationale Karriere ein. Dazu gehörten der Bildhauer Aleksandr Archipenko, die Malerin und Bühnenbildnerin Aleksandra Ekster sowie der Erneuerer jüdischer Kunst Issachar Ber Ryback. Auch Vassilij Kandinskij und Kazimir Malevi hatten enge Kontakte zur Ukraine. Dass verschiedene Strömungen - vom Neobyzantinismus zum Konstruktivismus, vom Symbolismus zum Kubofuturismus - nebeneinander existierten, war für die ukrainische Moderne bezeichnend. In der bildenden Kunst wie in der Literatur diskutierten Modernisten mit Traditionalisten. Künstler aller Lager empfanden ein Bedürfnis, ihr Kunstverständnis einem breiteren Publikum in der Ukraine und in Europa zu öffnen. Dazu standen ihnen eine Reihe neu gegründeter Zeitschriften zur Verfügung. Manche ukrainische Zeitschrift überdauerte um einige Jahre die Zeit, als die Avantgarde in Sowjetrussland schon verdrängt und verpönt war. Die Erscheinungsform der post-sozialistischen Stadt mit ihren Symbolen, Funktionen und Metaphern konnte nicht komplett von Bezügen zu vergangenen Staatsformen und deren Ideologien befreit werden.
