[light shelfwear to book, front endpaper is corner-clipped; the jacket is a little edgeworn, with a short closed tear and associated diagonal crease at top left corner of front panel, old internal tape-repair at top of spine, a couple of tiny nicks at edges of rear panel]. Novel about a female patient at a state mental hospital. The author, per the jacket blurb, was "one of the country's leading psychiatric nurses," and at the time of the book's publication was Director of Nursing Education at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, Vermont (which had previously been known as the Vermont State Asylum for the Insane). In her Preface to the book (her first novel), she writes: "I believe in compassionate love as the healing balm for the gaping emotional wounds which have broken our mental patients. I believe in this over and above the 'mechanical' psychiatric treatments as we know them. Thus I write of Laurie -- her illness, her experience with life, and her response to a warm and meaningful series of relationships.". Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Very Good dj. 1st [U.S.] Edition. [book is very nice, virtually no wear at all, the faintest bit of soiling and age-toning to page edges; jacket has one slightly ragged closed tear at bottom front hinge and extending into spine, very minor paper loss at bottom corners of front panel, one additional closed tear at bottom of rear panel]. Novel about a young Cambridge undergraduate, "physically brave [but] a moral coward," who lets himself be blackmailed in order to conceal his affair with a knocked-up-by-somebody-else girl from his overbearing father (who's a Canon of the Church, just to make it all the worse), kills the blackmailer, is convicted and sent to prison, from which he escapes (to America, as far as Kansas City), etc. By the time he wends his way back to England via Canada, there's a war on, so of course being a true-blue Englishman at heart, he finds a way to enlist, and by golly if he doesn't end up earning the Victoria Cross for his heroism, at which point his backstory comes fully to light and everybody decides he's not such a bad guy after all. (I wonder what ever happened to the pregnant girl, who seems to basically vanish from the narrative about forty pages in, leaving Our Hero hanging out to dry?) Originally published by John Long, London, 1927; this edition "reprinted in the United States by special arrangement with the English Publishers." NOISBN. Illustrated by (dj) "Leo" (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Reprint. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, nice and clean with just a little wear at the extremities, slight scrunching to top edges of several pages in the middle of the book]. A novel of "love, intrigue, horror, and murder," the story of "a brilliant and ruthless woman, [a] governess whose charm and diabolic cleverness brought destruction in their wake." Reprint of the first novel published by this prolific author under her "Joseph Shearing" pseudonym; it originally appeared in England in 1932 under the title "Forget-Me-Not," and was published in America the same year by Harper & Brothers as "Lucile Cléry: A Woman of Intrigue." (Note that the book itself bears no date other than the 1932 copyright notice, which causes most booksellers to mis-identify this printing as the first American edition. Unfortunately, the clues to the 1941 printing are present only on the dust jacket, which is NOT present on this particular copy.). Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Good+ dj. 4th printing. (price-clipped) [good sound copy with only minor shelfwear, the 5th of the book's 8 signatures (i.e. pp. 141-172) printed on cheaper paper and thus notably age-toned, one-time owner's signature on front endpaper, vintage bookseller's label (Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco) on rear pastedown; the jacket is worn at edges and extremities, with a small bit of surface insect-nibbling near the bottom of the rear panel]. The author's first novel, a psychological horror tale set in a small town on Cape Cod, about a young woman (the book's narrator) who enters into a loveless marriage to escape her abusive father (who rapes her at the age of 14), only to be subsequently abandoned and divorced by her husband. She becomes something of a recluse, until coaxed out of her isolation by a local groceryman, with whom she enjoys a budding romance -- until her ex-husband returns to town with a new (pregnant) wife, and moves in next door to her. Then, in the words of one contemporary review: "Obsessed by envy and rivalry, by her own inadequacies, the advent of Ed's baby adds the final touch to her brooding, bitter unhappiness and ---." (Sorry, I've already given you enough spoilers. No more!) One contemporary reviewer described the book thus: "Crackling with suspense, a story filled with emotional anguish and fearsome passion, [the novel] is a triumph for the author. Eerie and gruesome, yet haunting and deeply sincere, it achieves heroic stature because it creates an impression unforgettable." It was also announced shortly after its publication that the movie rights to the book had been acquired by agent-turned-producer Charles K. Feldman, but no film was ever made. However, Wolfson (already an established playwright when this book appeared) later dramatized it himself under the title "American Gothic"; it was staged at the Circle in the Square theatre in Greenwich Village in 1953, starring Clarice Blackburn and the then-unknown Jason Robards Jr., under the direction of Jose Quintero -- who later gave Robards his big break in his 1956 production of O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey Into Night.". [modest shelfwear, slight deterioration to cloth at ends of spine; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with a slightly ragged closed tear and associated creasing at the top of the front panel, another short closed tear at the top of the rear panel, and some fading to the spine]. SIGNED and DATED by the author on the ffep, with an additional gift inscription in another hand. "Sol Kenner, the immigrant boy from Pedayetz, Galicia, has been in America for nearly four years and is now holding down a job during the day, going to high school at night and keeping company with an American girl." His job, in an upholstery shop, gets him involved in labor union matters, and he finds the relative sophistication of his 17-year-old girlfriend a bit bewildering, as does his old-fashioned Talmud-studying father. (Galicia, in case you're wondering, is a region spanning present-day southeastern Poland and western Ukraine.) ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." [nice clean book, minimal wear to spine ends, a couple of tiny spots on top edge of text block; jacket lightly edgeworn (see notes)] (B&W photographs) A major theoretical work by the outspoken Hollywood Ten screenwriter, who apparently had a lot of time on his hands to think about such matters; a little prison time and some blacklisting will do that for you. The book is described in the jacket blurb as "the first serious attempt by an American writer to develop an aesthetic of the film, [combining] intimate practical experience in Hollywood with an understanding of avant-garde theory and trends." Very uncommon in such nice condition. Wynd's scarce second novel, set during the 3-1/2-year Japanese occupation of Singapore during World War II (1942-1945), a time when the city was "teeming with people of all races [and was] tense with conflicts between Japanese conquerors and humiliated former rulers." The narrative, focusing on four Eurasian characters, "probes searchingly into the age-old conflicts, the psychological problems and humiliations that confront persons of mixed blood at every turn."
