Engraved label (2.5 x 11 cm) beneath the print, with a couple of remarque-style illustrations. The print itself is good, although a little aged and spotted; the margins and mount being rather more heavily affected. Attractive and un…usual item, the image changing when held up to the light. Two soldiers are shown dwarfed by the high ceiling of the chapel, which is decked with brightly-coloured flags. When held to the light the chapel is filled with the mourning congregation. Scarce. There is no reference to this particular Spooner print on the net. The dioramic print was introduced to England in 1821 by the French photographer Joseph Daguerre. Spooner published at least thirty-seven of his 'Protean Views'.

Attractive and unusual item, the image changing when held up to the light. The ship is depicted sailing on choppy seas, and the young queen seated with drapery around her on a verandah with stone balustrades and a landscape behind. Scarce. The only reference to this item on the net is to a copy in the National Maritime Museum. The British Queen was the first ocean steamship ever built. She made her maiden voyage in 1839. In 1841 she was sold to the Belgian government, and in 1844 she was broken up. Dioramic prints were introduced in London in 1821 by Joseph Daguerre.

A…n unusual and attractive piece of Napoleonic iconography, a full-length image of the deposed Emperor of the French, characteristically attired, on a beach with his hand on a rock, looking out to a sunset at sea. When held up to the light the Emperor is surrounded by a large group of enthusiastic soldiers, one of whom is waving a tricolor. Scarce. No reference to this item on the web. The dioramic print was introduced to England in 1821 by the French photographer Joseph Daguerre.

A printed playbill, approx. 42 x 33 cm., printed in two columns, central vertical crease where folded, occasional faults in printing, slight offsetting, chipping to extremities where extracted from a bound volume, else very good. Clarkson Stanfield (1793-1867) became the resident scene-p…ainter at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in the 1820s. With David Roberts he developed the moving panorama or diorama, long and high paintings that were unfolded upon large rollers for the entertainment of a theatre audience. In 1830 Stanfield made a tour of Germany and Italy, and on his return he painted two dioramas, including his Military Pass of the Simplon . The diorama was shown to the Drury Lane audience as act 14 of the play Davy Jones or, Harlequin and Mother Carey s Chickens , and featured 12 scenes showing Alpine and Italian views. Details of Stanfield s diorama take up almost the entire second column of the playbill, which concludes with a notice about performances of Byron s Tragedy of Werner; or, The Inheritance .

Añadir al carritoA striking and moving memorial to a young boy, a vision of a child's paradise with chromolithograph scrapbook cuttings of birds, horses, children, dancers, flowers and foliage, together with cuttings of hair (some woven). It combines two popular Victorian domestic crafts of hair art and scrapbooking, within an accomplished (but…probably also domestic) wooden frame in the gothic style. With its supersized hair-carrying birds dwarfing diminutive dancers this is an inadvertently unsettling piece of Victorian naïve art. Two glazed dioramas in a single wooden frame (c. 400 × 300 mm in all), each with chomolithograph scrapbook cuttings and hair, one with a single photographic portrait. Some spotting to the background prints.

Añadir al carritoRemarkable diorama depicting daily life in an indigenous community in the jungle of South America, most likely Suriname. Each of the figures is engaged in a different activity. While the men are hunting and fishing, the women are spinning cotton and baking cassava bread. The charming animals make the scene livelier and colourful…. The artist must either have seen the community in person or thoroughly studied it, as the traditional crafts are fairly well represented.The work is primarily made of papier-mâché, which has been painted with oil paint, but also makes use of dried plant material for the trees in the back. It is highly reminiscent of the work of the Surinamese artist Gerrit Schouten (1779-1839), who is well-known for his dioramas of daily life in Suriname. The present work is not signed, but is most likely not by Schouten, as it is stylistically quite different from his work. It may have been inspired by him, however, as the depicted scene is very similar to a series of Schouten dioramas titled "Caraïbenkamp" (Carib camp). Dioramas like this are seen as an important source for the life of indigenous people in Suriname in the 19th century.The black paper used to cover the wooden outside is torn in some places, especially on the underside and around the edges of the glass plate. A horizontal crack along the length of the diorama in the painted background, without affecting the structural integrity of the work, the glass plate is slightly dusty on the inside, some of the leaves of the trees have fallen, but the diorama is otherwise in very good condition, with every part still attached to its original spot.l Cf.
