Dust jacket toned particularly to front panel and spine; some soiling and surface abrasions as we…ll as small chips, several short tears, and light creases; small brown stains to front panel which also has partially removed old toned tape strip to closed tear at top center; light circular cup stain to rear panel; front flap retains publisher's printed price at top right; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Dark maroon cloth with white lettering to front board and spine; light bumping to spine ends; faint circular stain to rear board. Light foxing/toning and a few small stains to text block edges. Endpapers toned; short tears and bumping at top margin of pages 263-264 which was detached but now tipped back in with glue repair along gutter. Author's five-line boldly written blue ink inscription "To the Old Champ | Naylor Stone | lots of luck Partner | Your Pal | Jack Dempsey" on the front free endpaper. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A good+ copy in a good+ dust jacket. Acquired from a Tuscaloosa, Alabama estate. During his storied career legendary sportswriter Naylor Stone worked for newspapers in Little Rock, Memphis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, New York, and Boston until finally settling in Birmingham in 1940. The University of Alabama named its football building media suite after Naylor Stone in 2005 and a biography of the columnist and editor on the university's website notes that one of Stone's closest friends was Jack Dempsey, the two having met in 1919 with Stone being employed for a while as the boxing champion's publicity man.
