Trade Paperback. Condición: Fine. First Edition. This very scarce copy is in fine unmarked condition bound in cream card covers as issued. This important book is a collection of correspondence between Doctors and physicians Charles Edouard Brown-Sequard, Jacques-Arsene d'Arsonval and Claude Bernard. This copy is numbered 211 of the first edition. This book is from the library of Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard FRS (8 April 1817 - 2 April 1894), also known as Charles Edward. He was a Mauritian physiologist and neurologist who, in 1850, became the first to describe what is now called 'Brown-Séquard syndrome'. In 1858 Dr. Brown-Séquard arrived in London. During his stay there, he was appointed physician at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic (now the National Hospital), and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physician's of London, as well as Fellow of the Royal society. During this time he also published his 'Course of Lectures on the Physiology and Pathology of the Central Nervous System' an early exposition of what is now know as 'his' syndrome. During his time in London, Dr. Brown-Séquard made many well-known acquaintances, amongst others Charles Darwin, T.H. Huxley, and Louis Pasteur. Three years after his appointment as physician at the National Hospital, he left London. Increasingly, he was to abandon fashionable practice to concentrate on his study of what are now known as the endocrinal glands. In this way, he became a pioneer of the study of endocrinology. Claude Bernard (French: [b??na?]; 12 July 1813 - 10 February 1878) was a French physiologist. Historian Ierome Bernard Cohen of Harvard University called Bernard "one of the greatest of all men of science".[1] Among many other accomplishments, he was one of the first to suggest the use of blind experiments to ensure the objectivity of scientific observations.[2] He originated the term milieu intérieur, and the associated concept of homeostasis (the latter term being coined by Walter Bradford Cannon). Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval (June 8, 1851 - December 31, 1940) was a French physician, physicist, and inventor of the moving-coil D'Arsonval galvanometer and the thermocouple ammeter. D'Arsonval was an important contributor to the emerging field of electrophysiology, the study of the effects of electricity on biological organisms, in the nineteenth century. Ref SS3.
