A beautifully conceived collection of twenty-one stories drawn from Jewish Midrash, biblical commentary, and legend, retold by award-winning children's author Miriam Chaikin. Beginning with Creation and continuing through Abraham, the stories address questions left tantalizingly unanswered by the biblical text: the creation and jealousy of angels, Satan's fall, the Shekinah as God's female presence, the daughters of Adam and Eve, the origin of lying, the mysterious Emerald Book of Secrets, and Abraham's journey toward monotheism. Chaikin identifies her sources in an extensive concluding section of notes and references, distinguishing biblical passages from later legend and explaining that the narrative thread and dialogue are her own. Contemporary reviewers particularly praised the combination of scholarship and storytelling; Kirkus noted the stories' "rhythm and sense of mystery," while Publishers Weekly singled out Frampton's richly colored woodcuts for their ancient, reverential quality. The original unclipped dust jacket retains the publisher's price and remains bright and attractive, with light edge/corner wear and a few minor handling creases/rubs, principally around the folds and extremities. An original retail price/barcode sticker from the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington, D.C., remains affixed to the lower rear jacket panel. An unusually pleasing, well-preserved First Printing with its important illustrated jacket intact. The Sackler Gallery sticker is a small but unusually appropriate piece of this copy's history. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery opened on the National Mall in 1987 as the Smithsonian's second museum of Asian art and today forms part of the National Museum of Asian Art; Smithsonian records also document the operation of Gallery Shops in FY 1997/1998, precisely the period in which this book appeared. Miriam Chaikin (1924-2015) was a Jerusalem-born American author, poet, and children's-book editor whose writing concentrated particularly on Jewish history, folklore, religious tradition, and childhood experience. Brought to the United States as a young child and raised in Brooklyn, she later held senior editorial positions in children's publishing at firms including Bobbs-Merrill and Holt, Rinehart & Winston before establishing a prolific writing career of more than thirty books. Her work received major recognition in Jewish children's literature, including the Sydney Taylor Award for her body of work and a National Jewish Book Award for Exodus. Chaikin and Frampton were not first-time collaborators. Frampton had supplied the woodcuts for Chaikin's The Seventh Day: The Story of the Jewish Sabbath as early as 1979.
