Copy 769 of 100 (900) bound in quarter-grey leather with gilt rule over grey paper-covered boards, title in gilt to backstrip with red dot, in a slipcase of pale taupe cloth-covered boards with wooden edges, grey leather to head and foot of entry, later inscription by David Esslemont in ink dated 15 November MM below the colophon, press compliments card laid-in. Gwasg Gregynog's 'Descriptive Catalogue' is an elegant and most generous production, well-known for representing outstanding value for money in its standard edition in card covers. However, it really deserved a more substantial hardback binding, and this scarce special limitation addresses that need, transforming the book into something altogether more luxurious (without having to consider the the stratospheric heights of the 'designer' special binding limitation of 25 copies). This copy is further distinguished by David Esslemont's personal inscription and signature below the colophon. The Catalogue is an essential reference for understanding the modern revival of the Press and its achievements although the continuing absence of a second volume covering the post-1990 years is keenly felt. Fine (in fact Mint) with a Good (entirely sound and unworn but with a few tiny marks and an old liquid stain at the foot, of which there is no trace in the interior, neither of course to the book). Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was born in the north of England at Cherryburn, on the south bank of the river Tyne, twelve miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, a general engraver in Newcastle. Ten years later he formed a partnership with Beilby. Wood engraving was only a small part of the business and the majority of the work involved engraving inscriptions and decorations on a wide variety of objects such as guns, dog collars, harness, clock faces, rings, cutlery, and the engraving of banknotes, billheads and even bookbinders' tools and letters. Bewick is best known for his wood engravings in his two works of natural history: "A General History of Quadrupeds" and "A History of British Birds, Vol I Land Birds, Vol II Water Birds" VG+ Exlib with stickers on spine and back cover.…

Housed in the original felt lined folding box with a false bottom containing five signed prints, a set of stamps and two Penguin Books printed cover designs by David Gentleman. Also included is an autograph letter discussing the book and binding, a handmade Christmas card and a hand printed verse of William Wordsworth, produced by David Esslemont as a keepsake for the January 2002 Wordsworth Trust book weekend.
