The paper provided crucial evidence that the Little Ice Age (approx. 1500-1900 AD) was a significant, widespread event, not limited to the Northern Hemisphere. This paper by Thompson et al helped establish that tropical ice caps preserve detailed climate histories in the same way that Greenland and Antarctic ice do—meaning that one cannot understand global climate history using only polar data. Abstract from the paper: "The analyses of two ice cores from a southern tropical ice cap provide a record of climatic conditions over 1000 years for a region where other proxy records are nearly absent.
