Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. In the nineteenth-century, insanity and spasmodic asthma were believed to be separate conditions. However, this book presents several case studies that demonstrate an occasional connection between the two, such that the presence of one condition alternates with the absence of the other. The author introduces the idea of a 'metastatic' or 'vicarious' relationship between insanity and spasmodic asthma, noting that a patient's mental health could be restored when their asthma returned. The book explores the history of the medical understanding of the connection between physical and mental illness, and challenges the prevailing view that physical symptoms merely 'mask' mental ones.
