Buch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume presents comprehensive research on how southern European Catholics and the Japanese confronted each other, interacted and mutually experienced religious otherness in early modern times. In their highly variable and asymmetric relations, during which the politi cal-military elites of Japan at times not only favoured, but also opposed and strictly controlled the European presence, missionaries - particularly the Jesuits - tried to negotiate this power balance with their interlocutors. This collection of essays analyses religious and cultural interactions between the Christian missions and the Buddhist sects through processes of coopera tion, acceptance, confrontation and rejection, dialogue and imposition, which led to the creation of new relational spaces and identities.…

English text.; Hardcover.; 23.5 x 29.7 cm.; 1.4 Kg.; 182 pages with 256 colour illustrations.; LIMITED EDITION of 200 COPIES.; Unfolding Stories: The Dutch Tribute and West Lake Kuancai, so-called Coromandel, Lacquer Screen, is a monograph dedicated to a rare and extraordinary kuancai folding screen produced during the Kangxi period (1662-1722). It is considered by many as one of the most important kuancai folding screens so far recorded, certainly the most important example of the few recorded depicting European figures. Illustrating the diversity and iconographic richness found in kuancai lacquer, it depicts two intricate and masterfully executed scenes of The Dutch Tribute and the West Lake in Hangzhou. Featuring articles by three scholars, this publication seeks to cover what is currently known about kuancai lacquer, the present screen, its historical context and the parallels with Japanese folding screens, which, from the 15th century onward, often also depicted maritime trade and foreign merchants - including the Chinese, Portuguese, and later, the Dutch.…

Couverture rigide. Condición: Comme neuf. Edition originale.
