Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book tracks the development of the famous Greek historian Polybius from chronicler of his native Greece to renowned scholar and advisor in Rome, a trajectory that deeply informed his groundbreaking contributions to the disciplines of history and geography. The author probes Polybius's writings for a nuanced understanding of his methodology and reveals a groundbreaking commitment to accuracy and precision, particularly in his descriptions of locations in Greece and the west. Far from mere travelogues, these descriptions reflect the development of his theories on the vital importance of geography to historical understanding, and the central role of eyewitness accounts and empirical data to both disciplines. The work's examination of Polybius's life and writings sheds light not only on the evolution of ancient historiography and geography, but also on the cultural and political exchange between Greece and Rome in the 2nd century BCE. Polybius emerges as a pivotal figure in this exchange, as his unique blend of Greek learning and Roman practicality led to the development of new and more sophisticated ways of understanding the past and present.
