Le cinéaste et son complice scénariste Paul Laverty ont mêlé la petite histoire à la grande en s'attachant au destin de deux frères (personnages fictifs), dont les relations figurent une évidente métaphore de la guerre civile. Son classicisme aux accents fordiens, sa mise en scène naturaliste, l'authenticité des comédiens (pratiquement tous originaires de la région de Cork) font du Vent se lève une grande oeuvre historique et romanesque, intense et brute.
