Frontispiece portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Russell (Edmund and Henrietta Russell), proponents of Delsarteism, a system developed in America expounding the teaching of Delsarte. The couple's profiles are shown in gilt on the front board. Two-page preface by Walter Crane, dated London, 1890. Russell was influenced by Oscar Wilde, who had brought aestheticicsm to the US on his celebrated tour. In turn, the Russells brought American Delsarteism to England, where it enjoyed a vogue in the late 1880s and 1890s. Near fine copy with a bit of rubbing to the base of the spine. Spine has Lovell imprint at base.…

Rare catalogue of the British participation at the last great World Exhibition to be organised before the First World War. It was the first exhibition where British art was represented by the Arts and Crafts Movement. The catalogue contains a 7 pp preface by the now 78 years old Commendatore Walter Crane which in way can be considered as a sort of artistic testament. Other contributors are Anning Bell on sculpture and mural painting , Douglas Cockerell on bookbinding, Walter Crane on book illustration , Alfred Powell on pottery , W.A.S. Benson on furniture .etc. The catalogue is entirely bi-lingual ; French and English.…
