Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 186, [2] pp., illustrated, folio, quarter vellum with gilt title, tan paper sides, gilt title on upper cover, untrimmed, t.e.g., leather-rimmed cloth-covered slipcase. Title page printed in black and orange. The running heads are printed in orange throughout. With the separate 35-page explanatory "Notes on The Tragedie of Hamlet Prince of Denmarke" by J. Dover Wilson housed in a rear pocket, as issued. Interspersed throughout the text are 80 woodcuts designed and cut by the English actor, theatre director-designer, and theorist Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966), who worked on them for over 17 years and basing them on designs for his 1912 production of Hamlet at the Moscow Art Theatre. Of the 80 woodcuts, 78 are printed in black, 1 in black with blue, and 1 in black with orange. Title page cut by Eric Gill. Type designed by Edward Johnston. Printed at the Cranach Presse of Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937) in Weimar on thick handmade paper using hemp fiber and linen in a process developed by Kessler and Aristide and Gaspard Maillol. This copy is no. 51 of 300 (of a total edition of 322). The text of Hamlet is that of the second quarto (1604-05). Surrounding it are the text of two of Shakespeare s likely sources, the Hamlet stories by Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus (in Latin) and Belleforest (in French), each accompanied by an English translation. This English version of The Tragedie of Hamlet, now rather scarce, was published a year following the 1929 German edition. An ambitious and monumental achievement in fine printing, engraving artistry, book design, and typography in the 20th century. A fine copy: the contents are fresh and immaculate throughout; vellum backstrip and paper sides lightly finger-soiled; slipcase sides are mildly soiled, with a scratch on one side, its leather rim a bit chipped; a few areas of board edges a touch rubbed. Artist and the Book 66.…
