It retains it's vibrancy and is fully present. The only flaws are minor rubbing to the folds on the spine. It is housed in a removable protective archival sleeve. Orange cloth boards with black lettering and decoration to the spine and front board. Boards are lightly faded, mainly to the spine. Boards remain strong, clean, and firmly attached to inner page block. The 352 pages lightly browned throughout the book. Apart from this, all pages are clean and tightly bound. The illustrations colour and black and white are so beautiful. There is a small pencilled signature of J.M. Balfour[ James Moncreiff Balfour] - [who was an author himself, and wrote - Recent Happenings in Persia - 1922, and the work was considered by scholars to be an important work] to the first blank end-page. There is a small indented corner fold at the front of the book. Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Neither is signed by Langham. ONE: Agreement with Coward, 1892. 1p., foolscap 8vo. On vellum paper with red embossed tax stamp. 'I Walter Hastings Coward hereby bind myself to disclose to Herbert Hay Langham all Chrome Ore or Chromium Mine that I may discover or otherwise acqu…ire any right or share to or that I may have at present discovered or otherwise have acquired any right or share in the Island of Madeira'. Other undertakings by Coward include one to 'visit the said Island of Madeira for the purpose of getting samples on a first Shipment of such' and one not to 'sell or otherwise part with in any manner any property or share or interest in any rights or licenses in connection with any Mind, Mines or Deposits of Chromium or Chrome Ore in the said Island of Madeira'. For his part, Langham, 'agrees to pay the costs of the said Walter Hastings Coward visiting the said Island such visit to be made at such time as the said Herbert Hay Langham shall require'. Signed: 'Walter Hastings Coward', with a deletion initialed by him 'W. H. C.' At foot of page: 'Writers | Henry Lattey | 24 Cornhill. E.C. | Solr'. See The Times, 21 August and 15 September 1893 for Coward's guilty-plea to a charge of obtaining £1500 by false pretences, for which he was sentenced to 18 months hard labour. TWO: Agreement with Donaldson, 1895. Signed 'James Donaldson' and in his hand. 1p., foolscap 8vo. On ruled paper, with red 6d 'Postage and Revenue' stamp. Much the same as the Coward document, but with the final undertaking by Langham replaced by: 'And it is further agreed that whatever percentage of the profits is alloted to Walter Hastings Coward same to be equally divided between the said Sir Herbert Hay Langham and James Donaldson'.

A total of 8 pp, 4to, all on Palace Court letterheads. Dent's notes both signed 'Jock Dent.', and the copies both signed 'James Agate'. Two important, energetic and vivid letters by Agate, totalling 6 pp, 4to, defending Coward's play and his position on 'the intellectual and the popular', against the 'pseudo-intelligentsia' of t…he barristers Shearman and 'Jack' St John Hutchinson (1884-1942). As Item Two states below, Agate has instructed Dent to send the copies to Gye as he was present at his 'talk' with Shearman on 4 November, and because of Shearman's respect for his 'opinion in all matters of taste'. Good, on aged paper. ONE: Dent to Gye, 5 November 1931. 1 p, 4to. 'Mr. Agate has asked me to forward to you this copy of a letter which he has just posted to Mr. Shearman.' TWO: Copy of Agate to Shearman, 5 November 1931. 2 pp, 4to. Headed 'FINAL MANIFESTO'. Begins 'I may as well out with the whole truth, which is this. | The gravamen of my charge against the class which you and Hutchinson represent is that it does not go to those things which are really highbrow. [.] it is absurd to argue that any art of drama can exist for, say six people. [.] That class if it really supported the theatre would have kept "Hamlet" on at the Queen's, and made it possible for Huxley's "World of Light" to run more than three weeks to empty houses. It would have flocked to see "The Venetian" and Jean Forbes-Robertson's Hedda Gabler.' Complains that he has 'stood up for these plays in print and in front of the microphone', and that there is 'no case of any first-class intellectual play' which he has 'condemned or neglected or failed to encourage.
