This work opposes the building of a Nicaragua canal, preferring the building of a "ship railway" where ships would be loaded onto railroad cars for transport between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

He had an office in New York City from the 1870s until 1916. He was the author of A History of the Jetties at the Mouth of the Mississippi River.
